Official 2018-19 NBA Season Thread - NBA Finals Raptors Win #WeTheNorth

Trying to think of a reason why he'd do such a thing...

That's obvious but you seem to be implying that the Hornets are making a big mistake in paying him instead of some random veteran on a league minimum salary, when that's clearly not a choice three years after the contract was signed. That's all.

Gold. I really like that statement.

But for the fun of it, they are 5 players who all made between 12.5 and 13.5 last season:

1 Wilson Chandler
2 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
3 Jeremy Lin
4 Nikola Mirotic
5 Thaddeus Young

Just realized they got 2(!) picks for Conley. Makes more sense now. Good deal for Memphis.

No, just making fun of the original contract!

The original contract was fine, he was the team's 6th highest paid player and the #5/#6 option, that is how it is supposed to work. The problem is that options 2 through 5 generally blow, which puts pressure on him to be more than 5/6. But that doesn't mean his contract sucks, it means that Nic Batum sucks.

If Rozier leaves Boston, will Stevens stay with the sinking ship or return to college at $6-9M/year?

Is there a curse of Isaiah Thomas?

if Korver gets bought out, I wonder if he just waits around til the spring and signs with a #contender

Korver will be signed before Labor Day. Most likely, he'll be signed by August 1-10.

How about Horford to Indiana? He could play next to Turner and both play away from the hoop.

I would love it if Horford would move out of the East. Best defender of Embiid in the game.

On good teams it doesn't really matter who is making how much as long as you've got the pieces that fit together. Teams are willing to overpay for guys for a single year to get roster flexibility long term, for example. The Sixers are happy to pay Redick a shitload of money for one season at a time because it doesn't mess with the timelines of their young core and he's a hyperspecialized player filling a need.

The way the Hornets seem to put together their roster is:

Draft an ACC heavy roster of athletic tweeners with no single elite skill
Extend them on player-friendly post-rookie deals
Avoid the lux tax at all costs
Keep your roster as stable as possible at all times

It's an excellent way to stay between the 5 and 10 spot in the East indefinitely. It's absolutely not a way to build a contender of any kind. It hurts that they aren't an FA destination, so you'd think they'd try to move up in drafts to get more franchise players like Kemba.

speaking of the Hornets, Frank Kaminsky walked by the other day and you could just tell looking at him that dude will never win shit

I agree with this. Half of SLC is super Mormon. The other half is super crunchy outdoorsy and/or progressive. Went there the last two summers and really enjoyed it. It is definitely extremely white though.

Oh for sure

My 6 year old still talks about Lagoon, the theme park just north of SLC. He's been to Disney, both Busch Gardens, Sea World, and his favorite theme park is that one day we spent at Lagoon.

Just a heads up that the only player on the Hornets roster from the ACC is Marvin Williams. They drafted Frank Johnson from Duke in 2007 and Malichi Richardson from Syracuse in 2016 and immediately traded them both. Aside from those two guys who never even got an inverview as a Hornets draft pick, the last ACC plyer the Hornets picked was Gerald Henderson in 2009 who is now a broadcaster for the Hornets.

You're right, I apologize, that's a mischaracterization.

Check out this list of heavy hitters:

One All-Star. Pathetic. And Harris is the only other player even close to an All-Star level. The Hornets are just really bad at drafting. You couldn't even put a playoff rotation together from the best 8 players.

Yeah, on average, over the past 10 years the Hornets have picked 12th in the first round. In the two years in Bobcats/new Hornets history when they picked second, the #1 picks were Dwight Howard and Anthony Davis.

They also drafted Dwayne Bacon from FSU in 2017 who is still on the roster and actually pretty good when he gets to play, but point taken.
