OFFICIAL 2018 MLB PLAYOFFS Thread (Cubs free)

I doubt he'll see much time in the field.

Feels like a panic move for a team that's free-falling in a winnable division. Unless they think the Bour injury is worse than they're letting on.

Meanwhile, the national media sure is desperate for the Yankees to make a game of it in the AL East.

Any given night, they have about 3 guys on the bench whose sole function is as a pinch hitter. They just lost a game where a pitcher, pinch running, tried to tag up on a fly ball and advance to third with two outs, only to get called out for leaving early. Nats are being willed back in the race.

If the playoffs started today, you'd have Oakland @ NYY and Atlanta @ Milwaukee as the wild cards. The Red Sox and Cubs have the best league records. The Phillies would host AZ/LAD and the Astros would host the Indians.

Gonna be a fun two months.

~One month later, seems like the only questions in the AL are who will host the WC game and whether the A's can catch the Astros. Too bad for the M's - they'd be leading two of the three divisions in the NL with their current record.

As for the NL, Atlanta and Chicago are in good shape, but the West and WC should be fun down the stretch.

Braves look to be in the prime position to win the NL East, but their schedule the rest of the way is much tougher than the Phillies, and the Phillies still have two series left against Atlanta. That said, the Phillies have played like crap over the last 3 weeks. So, the Braves may win by default.

NL West will be fun until the end. Will be happy if anyone other than the Dodgers win.

In the AL, in addition to the A's possibly catching the Astros, the A's could catch the Yankees for WC homefield. That said, the A's lost two more starting pitchers in the last week (that's 5 starters currently on the DL, just amazing how they have continued to win); at some point, that has to catch up with the A's.

Finally, even though they are out of it, kudos to the Rays they have 4th best record in baseball since the middle of June, and look like they could win close to 90 games. In most years, a team with their record would at least be contending for a WC spot.

Nats are being willed back in the race.

They probably need back-to-back sweeps in their remaining Braves and Phillies series. If they're still chasing both teams after that week it's pretty much hopeless with the Braves and Phillies playing each other in 7 of the last 10 games. They'll be chasing guaranteed wins.

I enjoy this on numerous levels...

Since the trade deadline, the Mariners are 16-20 and the Phillies are 15-20. Eeesh. That's how you lose a pennant race.

Today's Philadelphia lineup features-

Hoskins 7
Bour 3
Santana 5
Cabrera 6

Just awful, awful defensive team.

Positions. Before this year, Carlos Santana only played 3rd in one other season, in 2014. Probably a reason for that.

Sometimes you don't realize the difference between good fielding and bad fielding without looking up the numbers because some people look decent, but only in a limited range. An easy case of when you can realize the difference is Daniel Murphy, he is miserable in the field - it's like a complete black hole at 2nd base. He would be a great DH candidate for someone next year.

Fangraphs has the A's as the best defensive team in baseball this year; a big reason why they have the best record in baseball over the last 3 months with MLB's smallest payroll, and starting rotation of Edwin Jackson, Trevor Cahill, Mike Fiers, and whomever else is available (also helps to have the deepest bullpen in the game).

Love Daniel Murphy. Love when he bats in clutch situations. That said, he is a DH playing second base. One reason the Nats have actually played better since the trade despite losing a key bat in an inconsistent lineup is that they now turn ground balls to the right side into outs.

If possible, the rest of the Cubs' defense also just makes Murphy look even worse comparatively.
