Official 2020 NBA Offseason - First Half Season Schedule Out

Collins is expected to command a salary at or near the max. The Hawks don’t necessarily have to pay him this summer. They could wait until the summer of 2021 to retain his restricted free agency rights and let the market set what he should be paid. Collins and his representation, however, will want to get a deal done as soon as possible.

Collins has developed into one of the best young power forwards in the league. He has turned into a good defensive player this season, and there are few as gifted as him on the offensive end of the floor. When directly asked if he considers Collins a priority for the Hawks’ future, Schlenk gave a succinct answer.

“Yeah. John is one of our best players,” Schlenk said.

Back to back triple doubles for Ben Simmons, and the Sixers comfortably beat the Clips.

Weirdest team in the NBA. They turn it on for games like this and then play like utter shit a lot of the rest of the time.

Simmons' 5 most defended players this season: Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, Bradley Beal, Pascal Siakam, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Those players have combined to score 50 points on 19-59 FG when guarded by Simmons. Tatum sucks but the rest of those guys are pretty good.

Kawhi had 30 on 12 of 23 but he was 7 of 17 guarded by Simmons.

Ben should really be in the dpoty conversation.

Interesting moment at the end of the Spurs/OKC game. ~14 sec left, Spurs shooting FT's. CP3 by the SA bench. Pop and Duncan standing on the sideline. CP3 and Timmy chatting. Duncan has that surprised look on his face. Maybe CP3 told him Wake just beat UNC?

"You know that program we put on the national map? Danny Manning is still being given free reign to destroy it."
"What?!"

or:

"You know how Danny Manning is destroying our program? I donated a locker room as a vote of support."
"What?!"

Fin.

Or:

"You really doing this coaching thing? Wake might be firing Manning. You interested?"

Defensive ratings are so overrated. A few years ago, Harden got an all star defensive rating because he played with CP3, Ariza, Tucker and Capela. Harden still was an awful defender but his teammates grossly inflated his rating.

Defensive rating is one measure, and the fact that three Bucks are all in the top 3 tells you a lot about the effect being in a good team defense has. Do we think Donte DiVincenzo is the third best defensive player in the league?

Ben's leading the league in steals, 4th in Def Win Shares (and with 500 more minutes played, and 5 more starts than Giannis, Ben is in first in in DWS/48).

If you compare their individual guarding stats, Giannis has a better FG% against in long twos and threes, but closer to the rim, within 10 feet Ben has a better % against. A lot of that comes down to the positions each player is guarding--Ben guards anywhere from 2-5, and Giannis is almost never asked to do that. Ben takes the other team's best player unless it's a big C basically every minute he's playing defense.

If the season ended today, you'd probably have a strong case for giving MVP and DPOTY to Giannis but again, Ben should absolutely be in the conversation. I'd say he's either the second or third best defensive player in the league right now, and doing it all on the 10th best defensive team, instead of on the 1st best defensive team.

Really just wanted to pump up my Bucks after hearing about how great Philly's D was going to be this year. But what am I missing here -- he looks like he is 33 in DWS and not even on the charts in DWS/48?

I don't think he cracks top 5 in DPOY: Giannis, Gobert, Kawhi, Smart and, wait for it -- Embiid.

Also, don't sleep on Donte.

Gobert is a rim protector. Kawhi doesn't really have the stats. SMART?!?!?

Do you think Naz Mitrou-Long is really the 4th rated DWS player? Use basketball-reference, they sort out minutes qualifications for you: https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2020_leaders.html

If the stats don't show Kawhi as a Top 5 defender, those stats are total bullshit.

counting stats show he's 13th in steals, 89th in blocks

advanced stats say 18th in DWS, 24th in DBPM

Wings don't get many blocks.

James Harden is 9th in steals for active players and he's a terrible defender. Matadors look down on his D. He has also been in the Top 20 four times in DWS.

I doubt you could find any coach in the NBA that wouldn't pick Kawhi as one of the Top 3 (at worst) non-big defenders in the NBA. Many would probably pick him #1.

There are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics.

If you watch closely, Kawhi's defense is getting weaker and weaker. He's ferocious. When he wants to be. Sometimes he doesn't want to be. Also, he trusts his teammates less than he has in previous stops. He ends up over-protecting guys (Harrell, Lou Williams) he thinks are going to fuck up. Sometimes they don't fuck up and he's in bad positions as a result.

Did you watch last night rj? The Clips are a pretty fearsome defensive team at times (though missing PatBev hurt them), and they're even more intimidating offensively. It's scary to have to put your worst defender on Lou Williams or Landry Shamet, those dudes can light you up.

But uh, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard could do absolutely nothing to stop Ben Simmons getting to the rim. That's something Boston and Miami do pretty much every time they play the Sixers.

Talk about small sample size. One game does show everything.

But anyone who doesn't think Kawhi is beyond an elite defender doesn't know anything about the game. There isn't a GM or coach in the NBA that would take your position about Kawhi's D.

Kawhi is an elite defender when he wants to be. But he doesn't always want to be in the regular season. Kinda like LeBron the last several years (though LeBron has appeared to step up the regular season defensive effort this season).
