Official Diamond Deacs Thread: Wake sweeps Clemson; ACCT starts Wednesday

From the official website (when teams play will be announced by 12 today).

As the No. 1 overall seed, Florida State (43-12, 24-6) will be placed atop Pool A and will be joined by No. 4 Virginia (36-16-1, 18-12), No. 5 Clemson (32-24, 16-14) and No. 8 Georgia Tech (33-24, 12-18). North Carolina (42-13, 22-8) is the No. 2 seed and will be joined in Pool B by No. 3 NC State (38-15, 19-11), No. 6 Miami (34-19, 16-14) and No. 7 Wake Forest (32-22, 13-17).

Under the pool-play format, each team will play one game against each of the other three opponents in its division Wednesday-Saturday (May 23-26). The two teams with the best records within their respective division brackets will advance to the title game on Sunday, May 27, with the winner earning the ACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

All 13 games of this year’s ACC Baseball Championship will be televised for the sixth straight year. RSN, a regional network that covers the entire conference footprint, will carry 12 total games on Wednesday through Saturday. Please check theACC.com for local affiliates and stations. Sunday’s noon championship game will televised nationally by ESPN2.

All games will live-streamed via the Internet by ESPN3. In addition, Sirius 93 will broadcast all 13 games live via satellite radio, and every game with exception of the Wednesday and Friday 7 p.m. games will also be broadcast live via satellite radio on XM 190. Live stats will be available at the ACC Baseball Championship site.

Mac's draft stock has got to be skyrocketing. I had heard about a month ago that Holmes was likely to return to school next year, but I figure that's pretty iffy too.

Mac will definitely be pretty highly drafted, I've read articles about him being a legit 5-tool prospect. I was talking to one of the scouts a couple weeks ago at the game who was there to watch Mac and said that no one really wants him in right field and that there has been some discussion of moving him back to pitcher to be a long reliever. This scout wants him to be a catcher though because he has an absolute cannon of an arm. I don't know how realistic that is, but that's fine.

Blair's stock has been increasing as well but I don't know how well he will do to be honest. Holmes and Cooney will both get drafted again for sure.

I defintely think Conney and Mac are gone, but I hope Holmes comes back. Hopefully Fischer is legit too.

I don't know if anybody's posted it yet, but Cooney made the Baseball America Draft Top 200, the first time in a couple of years we've had someone make it.

116. Tim Cooney, lhp, Wake Forest

Undrafted out of high school, Cooney emerged as an early-round prospect last season when he went 7-3, 3.01 with 91 strikeouts and 18 walks in 99 innings for the Deacons. For Chatham in the Cape Cod League last summer, Cooney had 46 strikeouts to just eight walks in 48 innings. His junior season has been a different story, as he's been up and down throughout. In 13 starts he was 5-6, 3.76 with 76 strikeouts and 36 walks in 84 innings. Cooney relies on command, so he has been inconsistent because it has been inconsistent. He has a good delivery but seemed to be overthrowing this year. His fastball ranges from 87-93 mph, and he'll typically sit 88-91. He has good secondary stuff in a cutter, curveball and changeup. The cutter is an out pitch that can sit in the mid-80s, and he uses his changeup against righties. His curveball is inconsistent. Despite a rocky season, scouts like the package Cooney offers and his overall track record, and he still has a good chance to go in the first few rounds.

Looks like we play at 7:00 in Greensboro for the ACC Tourney Wednesday (UNC), Thursday (State), and Friday (Miami) of this week with a shot to make the NCAA Tourney. No reason for our fans not to show up. I'm gonna try and make it Wed. and Thurs.

Anybody have an idea where Cooney and Mac will be drafted? Whether they leave, I would guess, depends a lot on draft slot. Cooney being a lefty helps him out a lot.

Holmes, or really anyone not leaving, would have a lot to do with draft position. If you are drafted in the late rounds by an organization, your contract stinks and you aren't guaranteed a lot of time to prove yourself. If you stay and bump up your draft stock, you make more money and will be kept around longer to evaluate. David Bush, who was an All-American at Wake, came back for his senior year after being drafted his junior year and moved up to a 2nd round pick (I believe), and it worked out pretty well for him.

What's the difference between him and Cooney, as far as draft position is concerned?

From Aaron Fitt Baseball America:

Wake Forest found a couple of gems in the Sunshine State in SS Jack Curtis and CF/2B Joey Rodriguez. Curtis has a strong righthanded bat and a good arm, while Rodriguez has flashed five-tool potential, though his game needs refinement. Athletic LHP Mark McCoy from New Jersey has the makings of three average pitches in his fastball, changeup and curveball.
