How do they pretend to stop illegal operations they barely acknowledge exist and are crucial to keeping them in power?
 
If the Russians really wanted to foment trouble they should support all Democratic candidates this time around to get the other side outraged.

I expect Trump to call any democratic gains "fake elections" anyways, so would probably be a grand strategy

To our knowledge, it’s the fullest empirical record to date of Russian trolls’ actions on social media, showing a relentless and systematic onslaught. In concert with the researchers who first pulled the tweets, FiveThirtyEight is uploading them to GitHub so that others can explore the data for themselves.

Just stumbled across Anthony Bourdain’s Russia episode from 2014 on Netflix. Much of the episode revolves around Putin, rampant corruption and the dissident community in Russia (including visits to a couple of protests). There are a handful of remarks in the episode that are damn near prophetic...including Bourdain comparing Vladimir Putin to Donald Trump due to their Napoleon complexes.

Lots of good interviews with former oligarchs and current Russian dissidents. Bourdain doesn’t hold back or mince words either. Highly recommend it.

ETA: one of the guys he interviewed (former deputy to Yelstin) was assassinated in 2015.
