Official Russian Election Interference Thread

So is there a problem or isn't there? I'm confused from a couple weeks ago when there didn't seem to be much of a problem. Or there was a problem as it related to geopolitical standing and Russia's threat to America, but simply not in the arena of Russia trying to meddle in American politics? It's really hard to keep the chart straight these days.

It's not hard.
Russia is an actual problem. Has been since before your parents were born.
Russia! Didn't cost HRC the election. Being a turribe candidate did that. Twice, actually.

It helps to be able to conceive of a world in which some people might not blindly vote for the Democrat nominee.

yes, but also they did meddle to help the Republican nominee beat her. not mutually exclusive.

If I get this straight, were it to come out that VT had paid russian operatives to illegally spy on UNC practices before the game last week, VT should suffer no consequences because they were going to curb-stomp UNC no matter what.

Convenient morals, to be sure. Sad (again), but not surprising (again).

Did the number only change because Russia! Starting to impact Democrats? Kinda seems like it.

Actual Russia has been a legitimate concern since 1944. I don't know how somebody aiming icbms at your major cities is ever less than an 8.

No, the threat changed. Russia didn't attack us with uranium or ICBMs they hacked our political parties, tried to hack local election systems, and used social media bots to change public opinion. They weren't doing that in 1944, and probably not in 2008. Maybe they were dabbling in 2012, but by 2016 it was obviously an overlooked new threat to democracy in the US.

Funny...I actually used to enjoy reading jhmd's posts back when I lurked on the old board and the early days of this board. Thought he had some insightful commentary.

I'd rather pass a kidney stone than read this shit today. Good grief.

It's pretty simple, the guy's clearly ashamed of his party and the resulting crapfest so since he can't defend the party on its merits he is reduced to a sad troll.

Yeah that’s pretty much it. I mean he once again indirectly admits that his party is full of hypocritical rubes since “everyone knows that Russia is a problem”. Instead of wasting time trying to help liberals why not try and help your own conservative rube army understand Russia is still a threat.

It wasn't overlooked in 2008. It was overlooked by some

JHMD still doesn't think Trump is a Republican in spite of the fact that he is a registered Republican and won the POTUS as a Republican. I wouldn't worry too much about what he has to say.

False. You're going out of your way to avert your eyes. She was a dreadful candidate.

na, there's more proof that russia affected the vote than didn't. in fact, you have given no evidence they didn't affect the vote

Trump associate Cohen sold four NY buildings for cash to mysterious buyers

By Peter Stone And Greg Gordon ggordon@mcclatchydc.com WASHINGTON

Donald Trump’s long time business lawyer Michael Cohen may be best known for his aggressive campaign television defenses of the real estate mogul, his role in an abortive effort to build a Trump Tower in Moscow and allegations that he attended a meeting last summer with Russians in Europe.

But while serving as a top executive at the Trump Organization for a decade, Cohen himself was a sometime New York real estate wheeler dealer whose companies appear to have netted as much as $20 million in profit by flipping properties to mysterious buyers..

The facts surrounding one of Cohen’s ventures in particular raised red flags for several experts interviewed by McClatchy.

In 2014, a mysterious buyer using a limited liability company that hid the purchaser’s identity paid $10 million in cash for a small apartment building on New York’s lower east side that Cohen had purchased just three years before for $2 million. The handsome appreciation came despite the fact that the assessed value of the property, at 172 Rivington St., hardly budged in these years, hovering around the price Cohen paid for it.

Three other properties Cohen bought and sold in roughly the same time frame followed a similar pattern. Each was purchased by a different LLC, but were tied together by the fact that a lawyer, Herbert Chaves, served as the LLCs’ manager.

“An all cash purchase by an LLC of an overvalued property in Manhattan is usually worth a closer look by federal investigators,” said Jaimie Nawaday, a former federal prosecutor and money laundering specialist who is now a partner with the New York law firm Kelley Drye & Warren. “There are perfectly good reasons to buy and sell through LLCs, but the combination of facts is one that tends to arouse interest.”

Cohen did not answer questions about the buyer’s identity or how the transaction was conducted. Herbert Chaves, a lawyer who served as “manager” for the LLC that paid $10 million for the property, declined comment.

These concerns would be more believable as a stand alone issue, but, to hear it told, Dems never seem to lose an election. If it's not hanging chads, it's swiftboating. If it's not gerrymandering, it's Russia!

You guys have turned into NC State fans watching the Sweet 16. Always cheated and undepheated. Your hysteria means nothing because it is omnipresent.

Timely interview for Jh.

From Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX), formerly an undercover CIA agent.

The Cipher Brief: What would you identify as the biggest threat Russian disinformation and propaganda poses to the United States?

Rep. Will Hurd: The biggest threat is that they have been, and are, attempting to erode trust in our institutions. I would say Grizzly Steppe [the name U.S. intelligence agencies gave to the Kremlin’s hacking operation associated with the 2016 election] is going to go down in history in Mother Russia as the greatest covert action campaign, not because of the winner, because we all know that was fair and square, it was because they were attempting to drive a wedge between the White House, the intelligence community, and the American public. And so they are continuing to try and push that narrative.
