Trump sold $35M in real estate in 2017, mostly to secretive buyers

The trend toward Trump's real estate buyers obscuring their identities began around the time he won the Republican nomination, midway through 2016, according to USA TODAY's analysis of every domestic real estate sale by one of his companies.

In the two years before the nomination, 4% of Trump buyers utilized the tactic. In the year after, the rate skyrocketed to about 70%. USA TODAY's tracking of sales shows the trend held firm through Trump's first year in office.

'IVANKA SUITE' AT TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL COST $2,134 PER NIGHT, MORE THAN DOUBLING IN PRICE IN A YEAR

The price of the “Ivanka suite” at the Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. has more than doubled since Donald Trump became president, and a watchdog group says this is just the latest evidence of the first family cashing in on its time in the White House.

The suite, named after Trump’s oldest daughter and adviser, now goes for $2,134 per night, compared to just $914 at the same time in 2017, according to a new post by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), which is led by former Obama ethics attorney Norm Eisen. A Newsweek review of the hotel’s listings on Sunday showed the room going for $2,054 for a one-night stay.

Education Dept. awards debt-collection contract to company with ties to DeVos

Performant was among the companies that protested to the GAO about the Education Department’s 2016 contract decision. In its response to the protests, the GAO outlined the Education Department’s evaluation of the dozens of companies that submitted bids at the time. Windham’s management was rated satisfactory and its past performance deemed “exceptional,” earning the company a spot among the seven firms selected then. Performant’s management was rated “marginal,” while its past performance as a contractor was deemed “satisfactory.”

“It is beyond dispute that the [Education Department’s] decisions have, at a minimum, created the appearance of a conflict of interest,” Canni said. “Given the fact that Performant was not a highly rated [company] and, in fact, was rated fairly low . . . the agency will be under intense scrutiny and will need to explain how suddenly these ratings changed so significantly to allow Performant to leap frog over so many other qualified [companies].”

The podcast Embedded had a series called "Trump Stories" that goes into a lot of this, including an episode entirely about the Trump SoHo project. What it uncovers would normally be alarming but due to Trump's normalization, it now seems quaint.

Watchdog: Foreign regimes, others spend big at Trump properties to 'curry favor'

Representatives of the government of Malaysia, the American Turkish Council and the Kuwait Embassy also spent money at Trump properties. Trump critics say that the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution prohibits the president from earning money from foreign governments.

Republican campaigns spent more than $305,000 at Trump properties last year. Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke's campaign for Senate spent more than $3,000 on lodging and food for its volunteers in the Trump International Hotel in D.C. in February, March and April, according to the report. Clarke ended up dropping out of the Wisconsin Senate race in July, but he has been rumored as a favorite for a future position in the Trump administration.

Other well-known Republican politicians' campaigns spending money at Trump properties included those of Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who has feuded with Trump and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, both of California. NBC News previously reported that Rohrabacher has known ties to Russia and that his meeting with Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators.

Other non-political organizations detailed in the report included GEO Group, a for-profit prison company that has benefited from Trump administration policies, and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
