Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

What’s a demographic box canyon? Would a GOP operative vote for the same candidate as the minority of white men and majority of minorities?

If this person is as into the idea of getting rid of trump as they say, then they will vote for whoever the Democratic Party nominated, regardless of what happens.

Once you destroy a country and a lot of its institutions, it seems like it’s in bad faith to ask the folks who voted differently to do you and your failed party a solid.

How about “reasonable republicans” just shut up and vote? Deal with ideological issues later?

Yes we will.

The bigger question is whether the 3-5% of voters - Democrats need to defeat Trump in the electoral college - will vote for the Democrat regardless of what happens.

There are no reasonable Republicans. People like NED are not Republicans, even if they are registered as such. Republicans are Trump followers, they are a cult more than a party.

Agreed. Traditionally, political parties in America were not ideologically pure or conformist, but a leaky assortment of liberals, conservatives, moderates, and all sorts of groups. Starting in the 1970s the GOP began a systematic purge of anyone who was not ideologically "pure" and 100% in agreement with the party's right-wing agenda. That transformation is now complete. Their reaction to Amash is symbolic of that. He's a low-ranking GOP House member, but Trump and the GOP immediately went after him the moment he began to criticize Trump. No deviation from Trump-worship will be allowed, even from the lowest-ranking members. You're either a loyal part of the cult, or you're the enemy and must be destroyed. No exceptions.

It doesn't matter what label you put on it - whether it's Pubs or conservatives. And yes, Trump has established a cult like following amongst the vast majority of Pubs and prior Dems like BKF and Rosanne Barr. But there is still that group of establishment and libertarian type Pubs who are hate Trump. They'll vote for Weld in the primary and Weld will get his 10% or so of that vote. The question is will they vote Dem, Lib or Trump in the general. As NED stated, we need some of that vote - or at least for them to vote Lib in the close states (recall that the Libs did a couple points better than usual last time even though Johnson was daft and/or high most all the time). And as I've posited before, I think we're going to need a 5+% popular vote win in order to win the EC.

What’s wrong with boycotting Israel?

That’s some ridiculous “both sides” talk.

No it's not. When Trump tries to cover his racism by saying the Squad are anti-Israel, while Israel remains a US ally, and then she introduces a resolution to boycott Israel, it just feeds Trump's narrative. Not helpful.

I don't think she's ever been shy about not liking Israel. It's when people call her anti-Semitic where the issue is.

Dems should not be deciding their moves based on what they are afraid Fox News and Trump will demagogue.

Well you can also disagree with her like an adult instead of throwing a temper tantrum and telling her to get out of the country.

I don’t think she introduced a bill to boycott Israel.

I think she’s seeking to allow (make it not illegal) for folks to boycott any place they want to.

Many Trump supporters I know do seem to place their faith in/support of him in a cult-like manner, I agree with that assessment. They give the messenger a pass because they love the message.

Can you imagine if the US (or more likely, blue states) had retaliated against businesses boycotting France 15 years ago on account of the Iraq war?

Here's the problem with the "Squad", they're not always helping matters. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/omar-introduces-resolution-defending-boycotts-of-israel-likens-it-to-boycott-of-nazi-germany-soviet-union

Ilhan Omar has introduced a resolution supporting a Palestinian-led campaign promoting boycotts against Israel.

Walking right into Trump's words.

Did you just post a Fox News article?

https://www.salon.com/2019/07/18/rep-ilhan-omar-introduces-resolution-affirming-boycotts-as-protected-free-speech/

"The resolution from Omar — who has faced repeated criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike for noting the power of the Israel lobby — does not mention Israel, Palestine or the "boycott, divestment and sanctions" movement known as BDS."

I know there were threads a good while ago about Omar and her supposed anti-Semitism, but whatever her feelings about Israel it seems clear that to nearly all Republicans, and even a good many Democrats, virtually any criticism of Israel or Israeli government policies is instantly construed as anti-Semitic. To many members of Congress, unless you're loudly 100% in support of everything Israel does you're anti-Semitic. Omar has deeply offended that constituency and they've got their knives out for her, there's no doubt of that.

and it's dumb because a big part of Republicans' support of Israel is so Jerusalem is safe for Jesus' return
