Coaching Changes ‏@CoachingChanges 8h
@BloggerSoDear with having a replacement almost in place the process needs to speed up

That could really only mean Howland, right?

I'd call Marshall ten times. Then I would drive out to Wichita in a Brinks truck and park in his driveway.

If I thought Marshall was attainable, which I think he is if the price is right, I would literally rent a brinks truck and back it up in his driveway at like 4:00 a.m. Then I'd get Arnold Palmer, CP3 or Timmy to call him at 7:00 a.m. to tell him to look in his driveway.

Howland isn't my first choice, but if he takes the job, I'm going to be happy. He will be the most successful coach we have ever hired in basketball.

I wonder if Ron looks at Howland and thinks that he can be convinced to keep some of the staff (again!) since he isn't currently coaching and doesn't currently have his own staff.

As I've stated before, I don't want Howland. But if Ron hires Howland, I think it would be important for Howland to keep Battle around. Howland, like Pete Gillen, has been accused of being as good as his assistants are. Not sure how good a staff he could currently put together after being out of the game for a year and after his implosion at UCLA.

If you can't win at UCLA (missed NCAA's 2 times in last five years, nothing better than the 2nd round of the tourney) you can't win at Wake.

He also went to the Final Four in his 3rd, 4th, and 5th years at the school after taking over a program that was in pretty bad shape (Lavin only won 10 games his last year there). He went to back to back sweet sixteen's at Pitt, a national championship game and 2 other final fours at UCLA. He has taken over programs in bad shape and turned them into winners wherever he has been. His "disappointing" seasons at UCLA are years that Wake would be thrilled about at this point in time.

As I said, he isn't my first choice, but he wouldn't be a disappointment either. Honestly, he may be the safest choice out there. He would absolutely turn Wake back into a consistent winner for the next 8-10 years.

yay a retread hire. i would hate for us to hire someone young with the off chance of actually building something here.

I've long bemoaned the lack of "big name" hires in the ACC as a reason for other conferences catching up in hoops. Howland would be the biggest splash hire in the ACC since Roy Williams.

I was told that the only "retread" being seriously considered was Howland. Howland is Wellman's pick, otherwise it's going to be an "up-and-coming" mid-major guy.

Agree to disagree. Tubby Smith had 2 elite 8's and 3 second round exits in his last 5 years at UK. Do you look at his time at Minnesota and think that was a good hire for the Gophers?

Howland didn't win the way one should at UCLA after his best recruiting assistant left. And the chances of Howland and Ronnie-boy putting together a good recruiting staff at Wake are, shall we say, not good.

Not to mention that the guy is an asshole- that will certainly help smooth things out while he plods along for 4-5 years.

Take a chance on a young guy who might end up being great. Otherwise, you can hire Howland and be looking to do this same process over in 5-6 years.

Had SI not written that libel piece on Howland a couple of years back, you soccer nancies would be singing show tunes in the streets over his impending hire.

If you feel you must go with a retread, get one with three final fours.

Here's the thing.

Wellman hired Grobe at ~49. At that time, he had six years of HC experience.
Wellman hired Claws at ~46. At that time, he had fourteen years of HC experience.
Wellman hired Prosser at ~50. At that time, he had eight years of HC experience.
Wellman hired Bz at ~57. At that time, he had seven years of college HC experience (plus those years as an NBA HC).

I'm not including Dino because of the unique circumstances (he still had 7 years of HC experience).

Looking at those hires, it is unlikely Wellman goes for my dude Miller (35, three years experience), White (37, three years experience), or Masiello (37, three years experience). Even Turner (43, four years experience) is unlikely, though his Wake ties help him.

If you eliminate younger coaches and/or coaches with limited HC experience (because of Wellman's history and criteria), who are you choosing?

Fair points, but (a) when has Wellman taken a chance on a young guy and (b) Tubby went to three NCAA's in six years at a school that hadn't won an NCAA tournament game since 1997. He didn't exactly succeed, but Minnesota is not a good program.

Jim Harrick won a NC at UCLA. Do you want WF to hire him? He is available.

At UCLA, Howland had:

Trevor Ariza
Dijon Thompson
Cedric Bozeman
Ryan Hollins
Jordan Farmar
Arron Afflalo
Russell Westbrook
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute
Kevin Love
Jrue Holiday
Darren Collison
Malcolm Lee
Tyler Honeycutt
Shabazz Muhammad

It would be next to impossible to not have some great seasons with the best talent in the NCAA. Howland is never going to be in that situation at WF. He can't just roll the ball out on the floor and let superior talent takeover. Also, don't see Howland's style of play as conducive to recruiting the best possible talent to WF. You can play any style and recruit to UCLA. Howland to WF is a bad fit. Yes, it would be an improvement over Bz, but after 4 or 5 mediocre seasons and Howland past 60, we are looking for another coach. Wow.

Really hope WF dares to be great and hires a coach that can build something for the long haul at WF.
