One thing my grandfather always advocated was buying two pair of leather dress shoes and wearing them on alternate days rather than buying one pair, wearing it daily, then buying another when it wore out. Wearing every other day gives the leather a chance to dry out the foot sweat. The shoes would last longer. That is to say, if one pair would last a year, two pair, worn on alternate days, would last 3 years or more.
