If you're flexible on time, I'd recommend going in early Sept. After Labor Day, the crowds dry up and the weather is still great. May can still be dicey. I lived in Bozeman for 5 years and love Yellowstone in winter!
 
September might not be possible, unfortunately. What about early June?
 
The park won't be as crowded as July or August, but you'll be taking a chance with the weather. Since you're driving, I guess you could bail if the 10 day forecast didn't look good.
