Let's hear the guesses... this is the first Pope in 600 years to step down prior to death.

I'll go with Alzheimer's...

JPII was a health disaster in his last decade, but he still had his mind which allowed him to perform his duties. My money is that Benedict is one step away from eating furniture and playing with a busy blanket. As much as I disagree with the Catholic Church about pretty much everything under the sun, the conclaves are still always fun to watch. Funny hats, white smoke, millions of people standing in the square - should be interesting.

Why did The Holy Spirit select someone who can't complete the job?

I would prefer Palpatine...

Speaking of scary people, I really don't think they will pick anyone who can come close to surpassing the sheer terror that Benedict inflicts on mortal men...

Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

Yeah that would be great... CEO of Madison Square Garden to Pope in just a few short weeks...

Favorite to win it.

The church will probably find a way to put a pedophile enabling, Nazi in office again, though.

In 2009, he reaffirmed the Catholic social teaching on contraception, in regards to statements made by Pope Benedict XVI that condoms were not a solution to Africa’s AIDS crisis and were taken out of context by the media.[15] Turkson did not rule out condoms in all circumstances suggesting they could be useful in the situation of a married, faithful couple where one partner is infected; although he warns that, as the quality of condoms in Africa is poor, their use could engender false confidence. He said abstinence, fidelity, and refraining from sex if infected were the key to fighting the epidemic. He also believes that the money being spent on condoms would be better spent providing anti-retroviral drugs to those already infected

No offense man, but what the hell do you expect a leader of the Catholic church to say? Is it outdated and backwards - sure... but you're not going to all of a sudden have a Pope (or a Cardinal within a hell's chance of being selected) who just drops the "yeah you know what, contraceptives are alright"... at least he is saying "not all circumstances".
