Pro Life / Pro Choice Debate

You just explained why it could. The Federal government can perform abortions in the case of rape, incest, and the mother’s life.

Yeah, now all you need is Federal funding to set up an abortion clinic for a small number of cases in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Or allow doctors to perform those abortions on military bases and perhaps federal buildings with medical facilities.

There was some talk about reservations and Native American casinos building abortion clinics for their own communities and for medical tourism. That would obvious prompt a lot of backlash from Florida to Oklahoma.

Providing healthcare for the general public is well outside the scope of military facilities and again would require FUNDING and personnel. There are tons of medical conditions where the public could benefit from help from Federal healthcare facility and you may have noticed that there is no emergency to help out with any of them. And the function of the military and the federal government isn’t to perform an end-around on state law.

I’m not saying it’s a bd idea, but I don’t think Congress will allow it to happen.

Kind of crazy that we have military facilities in this country and they aren’t for the health and safety of our citizens.

But that’s a much broader discussion.

Despite the dollar spend for the military our government does not truly take care of our soldiers, sailors, and their families. They won't start taking care of regular citizens.

Yep.

Just lease some space to a non-government agency that provides services...?

Doesn't have to be funded by the federal budget.

I suspect, however, that this wouldn't be allowed by existing law in states whut done outlawed these services...?

Bottom line, IMO, is Democrats need to figure out how to gain a functional majority in congress and pass some damn needed legislation...not just related to this issue...and regain some sanity and integrity on the SC.

That’s why option 2 and 3 in that tweet are immediately or very short term doable. A federal service to provide mail order abortion pills and doctors to prescribe them wouldn’t require any infrastructure or any violations to local and state laws but you do have the Hyde amendment to deal with. A grant program for independent non profits to provide interstate travel to patients seeking abortions could be accomplished with 50 votes in the 2023 budget. You’d have to word it carefully to make sure it wasn’t violating the Hyde amendment but the funding wouldn’t directly provide the abortions it would just provide travel for people to seek reproductive medical care.

I went to an abortion rights rally and march here in Florida today. There is a lot of anger afoot. Many of the attendees were young women probably too young to vote in 2016 and they are rising to this challenge. I hope this keeps up.

The Democratic party has two issues, gun regulation and reproductive rights, to hammer in the election. Combine them with the ongoing sedition displayed by the Republican Party in since 2020. Make it an ugly message that requires a call to action at the ballot box. Hammer it without pause as a unified voice.

Or we could champion transitioning 6th graders

Yep. Whether it's enough to overcome the inflation issue and Biden's low ratings is debatable, but it's really the Democrats only shot at avoiding heavy losses this year. As to whether the Democrats have the will or gumption to do it, or if they can actually stay on a single effective message and hammer it home, is doubtful, if past experience is any guide.

The Supreme Court and the future of Roe were a main issue going into the last three cycles. I doubt this will be much different. If anything, both sides will be more energized.

Pete Ricketts (NE gov) is calling a special session to ban abortion, and Indiana might do the same. Overturning Roe might hurt Republicans this cycle, but Republicans sure aren't acting like it. Is anyone rushing to repeal their trigger laws?

I think the counterpoint to this is most people didn’t think it would really happen, so it’s real this time. Not saying I necessarily agree with that, but I think this November will be telling. What does the turnout look like and what do Americans care about more? Gun control/abortion or $5 gas? In particular as it concerns women voters as I don’t foresee men’s voting patters changing all that much from the last few election cycles.

Yeah. But child support is more expensive than gas.

Unprotected sex without the risk of conceiving a child is awesome. I don’t understand why dudes who presumably want that are against abortion. I know it’s all about controlling women but I don’t think they understand how they’re cockblocking themselves.

Or the Pubs are going to push through all the crazy shit we’d want to keep them away from, so we might as well vote for em now cause all the bad shit happened already, so we might as well get the cheaper gas
