Pro Life / Pro Choice Debate

To think people were arguing with a republican about whether this is what the laws really mean. Of course this is what the laws mean and what republicans intend to enforce. Just like the CRT laws are obvious in what they mean and what republicans intend to enforce. Anyone that was arguing otherwise (I know there were only 3 of you cowards here recently) want to step up and acknowledge this?

There’s a lot of people out there like scooter who don’t see themselves as cruel people who base some of their morality on the stance that abortion is killing babies. The big question is how many of those people will acknowledge the cruelty of forcing 10 year old rape victims to carry pregnancies to term or forcing life threatening pregnancies and change their stance?

In other news, Senate Republicans are putting together a bill to start child support one month into pregnancy.

It’s still blocked for the time being, but Georgia’s “heartbeat” bill also contains personhood provisions once a there is a “heartbeat.” While lawyers have basically conceded that the abortion ban now passes muster under Dobbs, they are arguing that the personhood provisions of the bill are unconstitutionally vague and should continue to be blocked.

In Georgia’s law, parents would be able to claim a fetus, once a heartbeat is detected, on their state income taxes as a dependent, and the measure would also require state officials to count an unborn child toward Georgia’s population. Mothers can also file for child support once cardiac activity is detected.

Sounds like a way to force the law to recognize that a fetus in the first trimester is a baby. It's the first shot in the GOP's attempt to outlaw abortion at the national level.

Yep. It looks like they're going all-in to the point of pushing laws that would even punish men. This is a sign these are true believers and they're not just using this as a wedge issue. We should all be scared how far they're going to go on this.

Punishing a likely small universe of men, considering it's just the ones not willing to support the women that are currently pregnant.

On a larger scale it's also about trying to have a counter to the economic argument without actually doing anything, or providing any tangible services or support. "Sure being pregnant is expensive, but we are going to require that men pay something! See? Problem solved." (In addition to trying to define the start of a life.)

That’s a pretty large universe of men especially when you consider it’s government garnishing wages from men. That strikes a lot of fear.

I agree that it’s a counter to the economic argument. It also is a counter to the discussions we need to have about universal health care which would obviously include pre-natal care.

When the first woman in a red state inevitably dies from the refusal of her doctors or hospital to give the perfectly normal, necessary medical treatment due to fear of being sued, fined, losing their license, or even being arrested and prosecuted, the excuses, denials, and deflections by Republicans and right-wing media nationally will be disgusting to watch. And yet we all know it's coming.

They are going to say “stupid doctors being stupid!”

Yeah there’s already been arguing about ectopic pregnancy that obviously we didn’t mean that, even though Texas is fighting right now the new HHS memo and the procedure performed for an ectopic pregnancy is called….wait for it…… an abortion.
