Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA) indicted

Yet he'll win his upcoming election because he's going against the grandson of an Arab terrorist?

Hunter isn't Trump...

The Dems should attack Hunter for throwing his wife under the bus like the cowardly thief he is.

Hard Partying and a Corruption Scandal: Duncan Hunter’s Political Life Unravels

In Alpine, Calif., a suburban Southern California enclave, Duncan Hunter was a good neighbor. He’d help people do yard work, or move heavy furniture. He drove the same dented-up truck for years. At parties, he’d have a beer, two tops, and he might go off and sneak a cigarette so his wife wouldn’t see. He rarely talked about his job as a congressman.

In Washington, Mr. Hunter was a fixture on the bar scene, and spent lavishly — over $400 for 30 tequila shots at a bachelor party, and countless fancy dinners. He visited one of his favorite bars sometimes multiple times a day, piling up thousands of dollars in tabs. On occasion, he would get into loud arguments with patrons, once over the choice of music on the jukebox (he hated Celine Dion).

In one sense, the Hunters’ story is one of financial woe not unlike that faced by countless American families struggling to pay the basics. Yet to many they seem particularly ironic, considering Mr. Hunter’s repeated calls for fiscal responsibility.

“The federal government is like a family that has overspent and racked up too many bills,” Mr. Hunter wrote in an op-ed.

'Leave my wife out of it,' Rep. Duncan Hunter says after all but blaming her

After the interview aired last Thursday, some voters interviewed by The San Diego Union-Tribune in his 50th Congressional District said they were disappointed in him and said they would not vote for him. Others stood by him, and still others took issue with his shifting of the blame to his wife.

On Friday, a four-woman panel on Fox News also tore into Hunter for blaming his own wife.

“Stutter much?” said Capri Cafaro, a contributor to the Washington Examiner. “This guy — his body language, the way he’s presenting himself — clearly I know he’s innocent until proven guilty but let me say a few things about this: what kind of wimp blames their wife?”

Hunter’s lawyer, Gregory Vega, objected to that part of the investigation in an August letter to the Justice Department, the paper reported.

Vega argued that prosecutors are pursuing criminal charges for conduct that falls into gray areas of civil election law.

“This is true even for personal indiscretions of the congressman that the prosecutors seem intent on charging,” Vega wrote. “The supposed reason given for including these details is that they reflect spending of campaign funds for extramarital infidelities and excessive drinking.”

Vega claimed that the prosecutors told him they had photos of Hunter’s alleged affairs. Even so, he said, the indiscretions didn’t rise to the level of a crime.

“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity,” Vega wrote.

With friends like these...

Hunter’s trial is scheduled for Nov. 24 ― 18 days after Election Day. Despite the criminal charges, the most recent poll by KGTV/Survey USA shows Hunter 8 percentage points ahead of his Democratic challenger, Ammar Campa-Najjar.

But of course.

Prosecutors: Rep. Duncan Hunter used campaign funds to pursue affairs

Federal prosecutors have accused Rep. Duncan Hunter of improperly using campaign funds to pursue numerous romantic affairs with congressional aides and lobbyists, according to a new court filing late Monday night.

The Justice Department alleged that Hunter (R-Calif.) and his wife Margaret Hunter illegally diverted $250,000 in campaign funds for personal use, including to fund lavish vacations and their children’s school tuition. Monday’s court filings also spell out allegations that Hunter routinely used campaign funds to pay for Ubers, bar tabs, hotel rooms and other expenses to fund at least five extramarital relationships.

In another motion filed Monday, Hunter’s defense asked that the upcoming trial be moved out of San Diego. Hunter’s attorneys took an unusual tack, explicitly arguing that their client should be tried in a place where more voters cast ballots for President Donald Trump in 2016.

“As President Trump’s first and most arduous supporter, it is hard not to see how a juror would be predisposed to cast their vote based on their politics,” Hunter’s lawyers wrote. “Hillary Clinton beat Donald J. Trump in San Diego County by 56.1% to 38.2%.”
