It's a tournament with GD as a tiebreaker, you have to keep scoring for 90 minutes (+3 in stoppage time as well, what a dumb decision to continue play). You don't have to celebrate like an assclown after doing so.
One could ask why Morgan was still in the game in the 87th minute up 11-0...
Basketball also isn't the best comparison because you're compelled to go forward and score based off the shot clock. It would be more embarrassing to the opponent to just run the shut clock out repeatedly and not attempt to score.
In soccer you can just kick the ball around and not really try to score
Winning is NEVER guaranteed in sports and especially in soccer. Just ask Australia and Japan.
I've been involved in youth soccer for almost 30 years at ALL levels. There is nothing more HUMILIATING than an opponent playing "keep away" against you. You don't get to attack or defend. And the team doing it to you gets nothing out of it either. You have no incentive to try to play for yourself. This entire argument about how the USWNT somehow were smug winners or tried to humiliate Thailand by scoring is simply a PC argument made by folks who don't understand soccer at any level. And as far as the critique of the celebrations, it's pretty clear that the critics are looking for any petty reason to criticize the USWNT for trying to be the best they can be and enjoying the moment. Winning is NEVER guaranteed in sports and especially in soccer. Just ask Australia and Japan. The USWNT has as much conscience and self awareness as any representative of the USA and sports in general. Shame on everyone for jumping on the bandwagon against them.
Don't disagree with much of this, but if I'm a backup player who didn't get into a 13-0 win, I'm not feeling real good about chances for any PT. It seems you could sub out your most critical players in the last few minutes to avoid a killer injury and give backups a chance to get some cup experience. No one would criticize a backup for going balls out in a blowout.
This is right on. If the game had been 13-0 over Brazil nobody would've said anything except how great we played. This isn't rec soccer. And it isn't about Thailand. This is about the USWNT trying to defend their World Cup title and play their best during the tournament, and as long as they don't cheat, display "unsporting behavior" towards opponents or officials, or play violently or recklessly with intent there is absolutely nothing wrong with what happened yesterday. I'm guessing nobody has asked the Thai coach and players if they thought the US was wrong. I'll bet they are disappointed and embarrassed, but not with the USWNT. It's the PC media who've decided how everyone is supposed to feel and act. I'm sure there are many who are complaining about this as being "over the top" who are fine with the foolishness displayed by NFL, NBA and other professional players worldwide when they outperform an opponent. They show it and celebrate it every day on tv. Losers in sports ARE NOT VICTIMS, and victors ARE NOT CRIMINALS. I don't remember anyone criticizing Jamaica or Venezuela for crushing the fragile psyche of the USMNT in the last 2 friendlies that don't have any trophies being awarded. This entire discussion in the media and the world is ridiculous.
The celebrations after about goal 4 were cringe inducing. Rapinoe running over to the sideline and sliding while faux kicking her scoring leg as the scrubs all danced around her after the 9th goal - really? At that point in time we've obviously established you're playing a glorified U16 travel team that might as well be from Bemidji. Show a bit of class and dial it back.
Agreed. No problem with them continuing to play hard. It was the continuing over the top celebrations that were the issue (not a huge issue, but a little embarrassing/unsportsmanlike).
hahahah France
You were doing so well until..."It's the PC media"
Huh? Why would we want to play for second place in the group? I don't understand your argument at all. Also the goal difference probably hurts us more than it helps since it lines us up to play France earlier than if we come in second. Wouldnt surprise me if we ultimately rue yesterday
