Ronda Rousey knocked out!!!

The most impressive part may be Holm taking Rousey down in round 1. She made RR look really slow

The way Holm calmly set it up and basically pushed RR to the sweet spot was awesome. RR's boxing skills are shit.

Well she clearly got too cocky and tried to stand and box with a multiple time boxing champion.

That's part of it. But Holly also won two grappling exchanges in round 1. RR had no chance.

I have watched the UFC from the very beginning when I was in middle school. In fact, it influenced me to train in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu after I finished wrestling in high school. Before I broke my back (unrelated to the latter or MMA), I was a Purple Belt, but I only competed in Ju-Jitsu competitions, cage fighting is a whole different ball game. I am by no means claiming to be an expert in MMA; however, I will say that I have watched thousands of fights over the last 20+ years. My take on the fight, and Rousey in general is the following:

- Rousey has been training in Judo since she could walk. Her mother was the first female American to win the World Judo Championship (Judo was not any Olympic sport until 1992), and Rousey was the first female American to win an Olympic medal in Judo. As a result, she has probably close to 25 years of training (she is 28).

- On the other hand, female MMA has been around for roughly a decade. However, of all the women Rousey has faced before Holm, besides McMann (Won Silver Medal in 2004 Olympics in wrestling), they been competing at most 5-8 years. In other words, Rousey had 3-4 times the amount of training/fighting experience, not to mention Rousey has been training at an Olympic level since she was a teenager.

- Unlike Rousey's other opponents, except McMann, Holm started kickboxing in 2001 and transitioned into boxing around 2002/2003 were she amassed a record of 35-2-3, and some crazy number of like 18 Title Defenses across multiple weight classes. Even though Holm didn't compete at an Olympic level, she was arguably the best women's boxer for roughly a decade, and has been in a ton of championship fights.

- I have watched all of Rousey's fights including the ones in Strikeforce and HFKC (you can find them online), and last night she looked:

(1) Out of Shape - She is naturally big, and kinda has a "Swimmer's Body", but she looked gassed before the first round ended. Her 2nd fight against Tate went into the 3rd Round, even though she was challenged at times, she never looked "gassed". In the 2nd Round, at about the 4:30 mark, she missed with an overhand right and slipped. When she got up and turned around, she was very wobbly, about 30 seconds later was when Holm hit her with a left jab that stunned Rousey and followed it up with the left kick to the neck/jaw area that knocked her out. My point is that Rousey should never have been that gassed to start the 2nd Round to begin with. Granted, she got tagged quite a few times in the 1st Round with a bunch of jabs and I believe 1 elbow, but nothing of major. I guess for people that don't follow MMA, had it been the 4th or 5th Round and Holm did the same amount of damage she did to Rousey in the 1st Round over 3-4 rounds, then one would expect her to be worn down at that point in the fight.

(2) Game Plan was terrible - Her strength is getting in the clinch, throwing/taking down opponent to the ground, and using her armbar. Rousey didn't start to seriously train in striking/boxing on a "High Level" until somewhere around 2013-2014. For most of the fight, Rousey tried to stand in the Octagon and "Outbox/Out-Strike" Holm, arguably the best woman striker in MMA. Granted, Holm does not have "Heavy Hands"/"Knockout Power", but she just kept dodging and using her jab whenever Rousey tried to charge and throw strikes. Not only that, but Holm has a very long body with long legs. As a result, Holm had the ability to keep Rousey away from her whenever she came in to strike. Over time, Rousey became extremely frustrated with the inability to do any damage to Holm. As a result, for some reason her frustration made her try even harder to exchange strikes with Holm. On the other hand, Rousey should have done everything in her power to get Holm to the ground, and try to use her armbar. Had Rousey used what got her to "The Top", then at the very least it would have been a different fight. I am not saying Rousey would have won, but at the very least she would not have gotten her ass kicked in Round 1 and knocked out in Round 2.

(3) The Amount of Fame & Hype - In 20+ years I have been watching UFC, no one has become this popular in mainstream culture from the UFC so fast (Kent Shamrock and Brock Lesner have had some mainstream success, but limited to the WWE/WWF). She has already been in 3 movies, and is about to be the lead in a remake of Road House. Personally, I question her decision to make movies while continuing to defend her UFC Title at the same time. She probably could have gotten away with doing 1 movie, or a 1every few years, but Professional MMA fighters train 6-8 hours a day 6 days a week. Not only was she making movies, but she was doing a lot of modeling, endorsing products, etc. The latter had to be cutting into her training, and she could not been training at the same level that got her to "The Top of the Mountain". Furthermore, I personally believe at some point within the last year she bought into her own "Hype", and thought she was invincible. As a result, I think is why you saw both (1) and (2) last night

She's the wife of a friend of the boyfriend of one of my best friends from Wake.
My brother's freshman year at Wake roommate's sister had sex with Tom Jones after one of his concerts in the 70's ......so there.

It's not a contest.

But if it was, you got knocked out like Rousey.

Looks like my friend was at the fight. She has a nice post-fight pic with Holm.

I haven't gotten laid a ridiculously large amount of times, but I have gotten laid after taking a wake grad to a Tom Jones concert. That man is the sexbomb.

I'm incredibly happy to learn that song is in my very limited vocal range for kareoke action

That sound you hear is ESPN execs weeping

ESPN has very little to do with the UFC. Fox/Fox Sports is the sports channel that has the television contract with the UFC (7 year $700 million that started in 2011). FS1 broadcasts the UFC Fight Nights, roughly 1-2 a month, and about 2-3 times a year Fox broadcasts a "Big" UFC Fight Night with a Title Fight (On Dec 19th is Lightweight Title Fight between dos Anjos and Cerronne, this past Summer they showed the Dillashaw Barao rematch for the Bantamweight Title). Also, FS1 broadcasts The Ultimate Fighter. I haven't even gotten to UFC Tonight, numerous UFC Specials and airing past UFCs (The Pay-Per-View)

Actually, the biggest financial loser is Rousey because her aura of invincibility is gone, and even if she submits/knocks out Holm in 10 seconds in a rematch she will never recapture the image she had before she lost. Therefore, in the eyes of sponsors she will never have the marketability as before. On the other hand, I am not sure of the impact of Hollywood.

In the short term, the UFC will make a killing assuming there is a rematch. In the long run, the UFC will be fine because stars in this sport have a short lifespan, but when one "dies" another rises. Don't forget that the owners of the UFC, The Fertitta Brothers, own a slew of casinos. Therefore, not only do they make money from the UFC, but from a portion of the bets that are made on the fights.
