The amount of money that keeping BZ cost Wake dwarfs what what they were paying him. Just ticket sales, merchandise sales, concession, etc, should offset paying BZ's salary.
When you look at the long term cost of reputation, ability to recruit, long term fan loss, the loss of a generation of young fans that never become fans, the loss of student fandom and the future revenue cost associated with that all together are many magnitudes the cost of BZ's salary.
On top of the financial cost to the sports program there is a smaller but not insignificant loss of prestige to the University as a whole when you see such complete bungling of high profile situation.
Every single years past the first, the cost of keeping BZ was many times the cost of letting him go.
