SPOILERS: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread SPOILERS

PhDeac, you are seriously the rjkarl of the star wars thread. You think you've got all the answers because you've seen star wars rebels. Very annoying

You do realize that defining what’s relevant and irrelevant is also your opinion and not some solid factual ground you are standing on. So you are making an argument that in your opinion something is irrelevant and therefore in your opinion doesn’t take away from the story and your enjoyment.

If it was relevant, it would be in the film. That's fact not opinion. You're not quibbling with me. You're quibbling with the people who made the film.

Snoke's background is absolutely relevant. A very strong Force user somehow takes control of the remnants of the Empire and is the unquestioned Supreme Leader.

No. I think the film has the answers that some people are refusing to recognize.

Some random takes:

- Mark Hamill was awesome. Same old petulant Luke. His final battle was perfect and I loved the twist. Very Jedi master.

- favorite line was Finn, trying to explain why all the TIE fighters followed the Falcon: "they really hate that ship"

- Favorite Easter egg: blue milk(ing)

- hated Leia in space

- liked the snoke kill. Had always wondered why Luke didn't try exactly that on the Emperor.

- liked all the millions of women now part of the star wars universe. That was particularly striking to me.

- I read a lot more ambivalence into those "abandon the past" lines than PH does. You burn the tree but still save the books. Star Wars can never really forge a new path; it must remain founded in the source material.

- Star Wars warfare is always going to be founded in WW2-era tactics and technology: dogfighting, trench warfare, howitzer-like artillery. also, the logic of the bombers was clearly meant to echo the Executor's asteroid bombing in Empire. Alliance bombers were B-wings and those looked pretty close.

- regarding complaints about the First Order military tactics: the Empire, at least, was always subject to defeat because they were always over-confident based on their military superiority. Also, because there was always the threat you'd be Vadered, imperial leaders didn't really take chances. The fact that they'd slow chase the fleeting rebels makes total sense. "Call for reinforcements? In our moment of triumph!?"

I really enjoyed the movie

Yes it was a ESB redux, but it was a redux with twists. Johnson used that story to make you think things were going to happen but instead to flip the script and expand universe. Think Rey is gonna be related to someone awesome, nope just a nobody. Think Ben Solo might be saved, think again. Poe, Finn and Rose gonna save the day through bravado and beating the odds, nah they fail. Luke’s whole arc was the regular mentor arc we have seen either a twist

I agree with the criticism on length. But what do you cut? Luke’s save at end seems necessary for the story they are trying to tell

It seems to me they are making it clear that the story will expand past IX. Otherwise they left a whole lot to pack into IX. I think VII/VIII really needed to be combined into one movie to leave more time to finish out this story

But I love the new direction Johnson took the Star Wars universe

Much more emotional reaction this time

Picked up Kylo saying how is Rey blocking me? She would die if it were her.

Don’t get how projection Luke was able to hand the dice (the very dice he used to win the MF from Lando) Leia or kiss her forehead

I liked it a lot. Definitely better than TFA and Rogue One to me. I really liked what they did with the Rey story line, good comedic moments, and the fights scenes were great. I thought it was the right amount of change but still keeping the nostalgia and Star Wars feel.

Agree with others that hopefully they give a little more backstory to Snoke. It may not exactly be relevant, but the Star Wars universe has seemed to always show that to use the force well, you need to be trained and it feels like they have laid out the history of that training with every other force user in the story. So to have this guy we'd never heard of, with (as far as anyone knew at the time) no remaining Sith to teach him, it's odd for him to just come out of nowhere and seize power and not explain it. Why wasn't he helping the Emperor out when he needed it last time?

But that is a relatively minor quibble, along with Leia space flight.

This is a good question. I figured it was similar to the Rey/Kylo mind melds where they touched hands. If I recall the doe disappeared from Kylo’s hand as Luke dies too

He didn't hand them. He projected them. They disappeared. Pretty sure Leia knew exactly what was going on. He "kissed" her the same way he "fought" Kylo. With the Force.

The potential for this was probably explained earlier with rey's blaster shot that kylo felt in his chest.

A lot of the casino planet scenes could have been cut. It was overkill on the class warfare messaging. And less Laura Dern. Some stuff on the Jedi Island could have been cut. There's definitely 30 minutes of material that could have been left on the cutting room floor without any damage the movie.

Top three favorite Star Wars movie for me! My only things I'd like changed:

1) Superman Leia
2) The Casino Planet - could they have figured out a way around this route for the movie? Was there not another way to get a decoder other than going through that extensive part. I mean I love seeing another planet in the Star Wars universe, but maybe they could have expanded the universe in another way.
3) Finns character should go in a different direction too. Maybe he could have been an up and coming commander for the rebels? I'm not sure, just throwing ideas out there. I think he's tough to find something for at this point....they honestly should have killed him off at the end.

I thought Luke died earlier

Why does everyone hate on Finn and Rey?

They’re both great

Finally saw it today. Enjoyed it, not sure where it ranks for me yet. My only real complaint was all the jokes. Humor is definitely an important part of Star Wars, but it gets serious about stuff too. It seemed like almost every time there was a major plot point or serious moment, there was a joke that punctuated it. The jokes were generally amusing, but they did take away a bit of the gravitas of several moments.

We enjoyed the movie. A lot of good moments, like Holdo's suicide jump and Finn's rebel scum line. Battle with praetorian guard really good. Luke conning kylo. Main complaint is the whole unnecessary macguffin subplot with the casino planet and the codebreaker character.

Benicio’s character was essential to episode IX
