State was impressive, even in a loss

The consensus opinion on previous iterations of this Board was that WF would lose to State almost everyone of those years. State's offensive struggled all night against a mediocre Clemson D. State needed a last second FG to beat Richmond. They are, as always, very beatable.

Everyone is so down on WF right now that the perceived difference between the two programs is really skewed.

You have no idea how much I hope you're right and I agree State doesn't look like world beaters, but their d-line is legit and our o-line really stinks. Unless something changes, I think that matchup alone decides the game.

Also, I don't know about the consensus, I'm sure most of us thought we'd win in 2007 and 2009 and I think there was probably another year in those other 4 home games over 12 years that was true.

Oh, I suppose we will bring our A game and will beat somebody halfway decent this year. State is certainly a candidate.

Yep. Pilchard is a knowledgeable fan, but he loses all reason when he defends Wake football.

Here are the scores and respective records of Wake / State teams that have played in Groves/BB&T in the Grobe era:

2001 - L 14-17 6-5 (3-5) / 7-5 (4-4)
2003 - W 38-24 5-7 (3-5) / 8-5 (4-4)
2005 - W 27-19 4-7 (3-5) / 7-5 (3-5)
2007 - W 38-18 9-4 (5-3) / 5-7 (3-5)
2009 - W 30-24 5-7 (3-5) / 5-7 (2-6)
2011 - W 34-27 6-7 (5-3) / 8-5 (4-4)

The only time Wake and State weren't within a game of each other in the ACC was 2007. Wake was a game better twice and State was a game better twice. In other words, these were evenly matched teams who played for the most part close games and the home team won all but one.

But you keep saying we've sucked since 2009.

We have sucked overall. Thankfully we played State in September in 2009 and 2011 before the Oct/Nov slides.

My point was that State didn't have dramatically better teams.

I'm not saying that running uncontested out of bounds in the open field TWICE in a one score game was unwise, but Vince Young's Wonderlic score is starting to sweat bullets right now.

State did not have dramatically better teams any of those years (even with Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson), but like this year, many WF fans thought that State had a dramatically better team.

Also State is probably a little bit better than us (who isn't) but they're not very good. State will probably be around 6 or 7 point favorites.
