The Future of Public Transit

Bullshit. Let the free market decide. Some entrepreneur will spend billions of dollars buying up properties and open his own subway.

The problem with this line of thinking is that moving people around isn't necessarily a value that is compensated within the price of the fare. The value stems from the economic development that results in property values and businesses due to the increased human mobility and freedom not to spend money on personal transportation devices. That value is pretty difficult to embrace within a streetcar, subway, or high speed rail ticket cost. Public transportation is very much a public good and needs to be treated that way.

Not only what I just said in the post above, but show me what entrepeneurs are building all the roads and highways we are driving on.

That's because the govenrment is crowding them out. A businessman can't get a fair shake when he has to compete against the feds and local governments for roads, national parks, control of airspace, dams, and "public" transportation. Great Society my keister.

They have tried public toll roads in SoCal....they keep going broke and being sold.

the concept that a private firm can do public transportation in most metro areas is ludicrous.

Two areas I think we should be spending a lot more money as a country: education and public transit. There is no reason we have Atlanta traffic. None. Should have seen that coming a mile away and spent the necessary money 3 decades ago to build a proper infrastructure.

So much American productivity is wasted sitting in cars during the work week. It's time people could be spending working, or parenting, or out spending money in the economy. Instead, they're in cars.
