The Leftovers on HBO

I usually do too. I just think this show stinks of Lost, as in it's just being weird to try to seem deep, when in reality the writers have no idea where they are going with it, or why.

Aren't they just following a book?

Not from what I heard. I haven't read the book, but I heard that the show was significantly changed from the book.

I want to like this show, but god damn is it depressing. It's three years after the disappearance and everyone is still walking around in a trance. Most people seem to have become nihilists.

Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

This is my problem with the show. Hate to say it, but people have short memories. 3 years is a long time for people to be walking around all depressed and weird still. I feel like it would go back to life as normal by then

People have clung to religion primarily to be able to rationalize sense in the world for pretty much our entire existence. Giving us something that significant that we can't explain would drive us all nuts.

Yes, this is an unexplained disaster/happening that affected 10% of us.

At least after a hurricane or a terrorist attack, you can reconcile the fact that not only did it not affect you personally (very likely) but there's also a reason behind it (weather/assholes).

Having people just vanish would call into question everything about our existence. Religion would implode/explode and more people would give up on life.

Understand what you're saying, just not sure I agree. I think a good number of people would flock to established religions looking for answers, and those that did so would become entrenched. I do agree that a number of cults would form (the white-clothed motherfuckers, the people who hug that one black dude, etc.) but not nearly as many as the show tries to convey. And yes, some would become pure nihilists.

But we're talking about 30% of the population in the religion/cult/nihilist category, at best. That still leaves far more people who would just be trying to have normal lives and getting laid. The show seems to flip that 70/30 to 30/70.

I think there's plenty of people acting normally. The teen twins are acting just like normal teens.

I think I do agree w/ you that religion wouldn't take as big of a hit as it did in the show, but then again this just an example of one town. If this was a town in Georgia, I could see the church still being pretty full.

If it was a town in Connecticut, maybe not so much.

Woof, I kind of hated the episode last night. This was sort of my confusion about turning the book into a show. It's not a book where a helluva lot happens, and the show to me feels stalled.

I still feel like after 3 years, people would start going back to normal. It seems like the whole country has gone to hell with the ATF having to come "extract" the cults before it wipes out the whole town. It all seems overd dramatic to me. It reminds me of that line from our boy Rust Cohle on True Detective in regards to Marty's wife getting back with him after he cheated. "People don't ever really forgive. They just have short memories".

That's the most graphic murder I can remember seeing in a long time.

I'm still trying to figure out if he is crazy and if he actually talked to the dude from ATFEC

Really liked that episode. However it seems with the protesters out side the whole "Why would anybody want to impersonate you?" question had a pretty simple answer.

That was obvious and not as fun of a payoff as I wanted.

The bro from Last Action Hero/Hell on Wheels is one of my favorite character actors, hopefully he's on it more. I wonder if the black guy's power is just to get people to cut through their bullshit and let their emotions out...

Sheriff/Nora have serious chemistry, good casting.

Yeah. I'm wondering if by the time you've come all that way and are willing to pay $1,000 to walk through a curtain if somebody just telling you it's okay to move on is enough.

Like in Good Will Hunting. "It's not your fault."

I'm leaning toward the supernatural. If not, this show isn't sustainable at its current pace.

Disagree on both points, I think the only supernatural event is going to be the disappearance.

So all the crazy animal stuff throughout the show is just massively coincidental? If so, that's dumb, and I will stop watching.

Lots of pet owners that disappeared and weren't there to feed Fido.
