The NCAA decided to help us out against Colgate

Looks like Wellman's position on the committee is already paying off.

Maybe, as committee chair, he could contrive some pre-Wake sanctions for Bz and ban Bz from coaching forever. Then, as AD, he could fire Bz for "culture" violations. He would avoid admitting a mistake and could claim ignorance of Bz's pre-Wake misconduct. I would take that.

easy solution for next time: don't play in an organized league

Seems pretty straightforward:

The NCAA mandates student-athletes who don’t enroll in college within a year of graduating high school may not compete in organized competition or risk losing a year of eligibility. There is a legitimate reason for the rule. It’s to prevent athletes from playing games in competitive leagues and gaining an advantage before beginning college.

The punishment needs to go to whoever invited a D-1 basketball player to be a ringer in a 30 and over church league.

“You know what’s crazy?” Harries continued. “There’s one player on Colgate (Murphy Burnatowski) who plays for the Canadian (development) national team. So the NCAA says you can play in Europe against the U.S., Russia, Brazil, Australia, the Czech Republic and Sweden, but you can’t play in a church league. The whole thing is absurd.”

Unfortunately, where the NCAA is concerned, that’s not uncommon.

If Wellman can get 80 percent of the D-1 players disqualified, Wake could default into the Final Four.

As long as those 80% include the players from Stetson and Prebyrterian.

What stops the summer league that our guys play in from triggering this rule?

It also doesn't seem very organized.
