Things to do in Barcelona, Spain

really, don't take all the 'guard your wallet' stuff lightly. of the people in my study abroad group who were pick-pocketed, all 3 were different weekends in barcelona. two other friends of mine, while visiting, respectively had a camera stolen and a wallet (but my friend, she's a BAMF, she chased the little twats down into the men's bathroom, cornered the kid in the stall and slammed him against the wall and got her wallet back). zippered bags. money belts.

she's lucky she didn't get killed. Kid in 2004 got cut open with a beer bottle in Sevilla outside a bar when he pushed a guy.

Just got back from Barcelona. I sent this email to a coworker of mine who went last week.

Amanda,

Here are some of the things we did when we were there.

Restaurants / Bars:

Vaso de Oro
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...rante_El_Vaso_de_Oro-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
This might have been our favorite tapas place. It was recommended by a local and it is a very cool place. Very relaxed and could be crowed…you might have to eat standing up. But the food was great and the atmosphere was better

Maitea Taberna
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...views-Maitea_Taberna-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
Traditional Basque style food. They have several trays of bread slices stacked with assorted chesses and meats. It was delicious! It is not walkable from where you are staying but it is well worth the cab ride.

Obama British African Pub
http://obamabcn.com/es/
This place was a trip and should be close to your hotel. They actually had good music late night.

Orio
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187497-d1482725-Reviews-Orio-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
Another traditional Basque style place similar to Maitea Tabena but a little more “upscale”. It is in the historic district.

La Champagneria
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...ixano_La_Xampanyeria-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
This is the Cava place that we did not a get chance to see because it was closed for the holiday. It sounds amazing but it is in a part of town that is a little sketchy but not too bad. There were two locals that told us this is the best bar in the city.

Things to do:

Segway tour:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...celona_Segway_Glides-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
We had a lot of fun on this tour but it was long. The guide is a local and seems to be a foodie so he can tell you a lot of good places to eat.

Bus Tour
http://www.bcn.travel/
That is not the link to the one that we did but they are all the same. Good way to see the city because you can get off and on as you please. We turned it into a bar crawl.

Things to see:

Sagrada Familia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagrada_Família
I am sure this was on your list anyway but a must see. It was under some major construction when were there and it probably will be when you guys are there as well.

Guell Park
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Güell
Cool Gaudi desgined park. The best view of the city that I saw.

La boqueria
http://www.boqueria.info/index.php?lang=en
This is the real cool market right off of Las Ramblas but Rach and I never had a chance to go because it was closed for the holiday.

I can’t tell you how jealous I am…you guys are going to have a great time! Take a ton of pictures.

Have fun,

don't eat at any of the restaurants on La Rambla. way overpriced and not good.

also, if you see a restaurant with a sign out front showing professional pictures of the paella they offer, don't go there. it's frozen stuff and indicates the quality of the rest of the place.

Yeah...most of the places by the ocean are not good because they don't have to be to get people to come in. Try to find a place off the beaten path or get a local to recommend you a place.

Most everything's been mentioned. My favorites:

Montserrat
Mt. Tibidabo
Picasso Museum
Parc Guel
Sagrada familia

I don't know if DuncanDeac is on the new boards, or posts much on either site anymore, but try him - he lived there for about 6 months after graduation

Definitely echo the Sagrada Familia recommendation. Very cool.

I went back in 2001 and we enjoyed the Mike's Bike Tour in Barcelona. Great way to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time.

either mike's or Fat Tire Bike Tours. I did Fat Tire in Paris (they're in Berlin, Paris and Barcelona), couldn't have been more pleased with a 'tourist' experience. Would do again.

Has anybody been to Barcelona more recently? Where did you go? What did you eat?

Barcelona is an overrated euro beach trash shit hole

The bus ride to the Dali museum and the little town where they filmed a season of game of thrones is much more rewarding

Even better? Madrid

That's not such a great thing to hear at this point!

I was there for basically two days earlier this year. Cool place, but I think that's the right amount of time. See the beach / port, the Gaudi stuff, and explore the Gothic Quarter.

Sangria was awesome, food was mediocre for the most part.

Did you eat at the places on La Rambla? The ones that all advertise big pitchers of sangria? If so, there's your problem right there. Plenty of Michelin stars to go around and the Adrias now have a slew of restaurants all over town.

As to the comparison to Madrid, to each his own, but I have spent a lot of time in both (probably a fair amount more in Madrid, actually, despite my name) and I vastly prefer Barcelona. Madrid has some wonderful sites and museums (the Reina Sofia is my favorite museum on the planet), but the vibe in Barcelona is way better IMO. Easily one of my two favorite major cities in Europe after Paris.

The food is also twice as good in Madrid

Unless you aren't a fan of tapas

Here now. Acid in park guell or gtfo. Gasteria in gracia is my fave tapas spot so far. So cheap. So good.

No, but wasn't eating at Michelin star places either.

Maybe we just didn't eat at the right places, but it sure isn't like Italy where every place is a right place.

Can't someone tell elkman where he can find a shooting range? :)
