Totally Unofficial 2011 CL Knockout Stages Thread

it's amazing how far Kaka has fallen. sad really. he used to be unstoppable.

United up 6-1 now. Anderson with the brace.

Andersonsonson can't score when it matters though because he sucks.

Lucas > Anderssonsonsonsonson

Should be a good final. Two years ago I was just back from Spain and was cheering for Barca. That won't be the case this time around, although United is a lesser of two evils.

Back in the hotel. Got into the match for 100 pound a ticket. South stand about 15 rows up from the field level near the tunnel (so near Stretford End.) Had an amazing time.

Andersonsonson scored both his goals on my end and both times ran to my corner. I'm 80% sure he knew I was there. Just makes sense.

Scholes is unbelievable and even moreso in person. Guy is a human metronome. Valencia is a huge boss. Nani was a tit tonight. Gibbo showed some class. Berbasex's first touch is God-like. Smalling and Evans were solid defensively, but showed they were capable of plenty mistakes when trying to play the ball out of the back. Rafael is a stud.

MOTM. Anderson. Followed closely by Valencia.

My throat hurts.

Also, there isn't any doubt on which two clubs are the biggest and best in the world right now, correct?

Barca and United are head and shoulders above everybody else. It's not even funny.

Ooo, so you were at the match today and going to the match on sunday too, dv7?

And at Goodison on Saturday.

Going to Isle of Man tomorrow to gamble. That will pretty much pay for the entire trip. That's what casinos do. Lose money to the patrons.

I'd say there's a bit of doubt if Chelsea beats United over a 38 match even schedule.

Well United just beat Chelsea in the semi-finals of the CL, which I would say is the much bigger stage.

Husky does bring up a good point though I wouldn't describe 3 points as heads and shoulder above someone

38 gameweeks is a much better evaluator than a 2 match playoff. At least that's always the argument given for European leagues...which I agree with.

United and Barcelona are the best 2 teams in Champions League play this season.

United still has some work left to do to be the best team in the Premier League over the course of the 38 week season.

I'm not sure you can say either team is the best in the world unless you specify the timeframe. 38 weeks is almost a year. Why not say 2 years? Why not 5? Why not 10? Or who is the best team at this exact moment? Who is the best team when healthy?

You act like his answer to those questions would differ. :)

Just in thinking about these questions led me to doing a little research. There are basically 7 teams that have been regulars in the Final 16 over the last 5-7 years -- Barca, United, Real Madrid, Inter, Chelsea, Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

So I looked at all of their CL knockout stage games against the other teams in the subgroup in the 16 team knockout stage era. I added Liverpool and Milan to the list because early in the decade they were as good as anyone, so I think that's a sufficiently strong side.

It sort of filters out some of the disadvantage of the draw...like say you draw the eventual champion in the round of 16, losing to them doesn't really mean you were only 16th best. You might have been second best, but thanks to the draw we'll never know.

Anyway, I thought it was interesting, maybe someone else will.

Barca -- Arse W, RM W, Arse W, Inter L, Bayern W, Chelsea W, Man U W, Man U L, Liverpool L, Chelsea W, Milan W, Arsenal W, Chelsea L -- 9-4
United -- Chelsea W, Milan W, Bayern L, Milan W, Arse W, Barca L, Barca W, Chelsea W, Milan L, Milan L -- 6-4
Real -- Barca L, Liverpool L, Bayern L, Arse L, Bayern L -- 0-5
Inter -- Bayern W, Chelsea W, Barca W, Bayern W, Man U L, Liverpool L, Milan L -- 4-3
Chelsea -- Man U L, Liverpool W, Barca L, Liverpool W, Man U L, Liverpool L, Barca L, Barca W, Bayern W, Liverpool L, Arsenal W -- 5-6
Arsenal -- Barca L, Barca L, Man U L, Milan W, Liverpool L, RM W, Barca L, Bayern L, Chelsea L -- 2-7
Bayern -- Inter L, Man U W, Inter L, Barca L, RM W, Milan L, Milan L, Arsenal W, Chelsea L, RM L -- 3-7

(Liverpool is 6-2 -- 4-0 against not Chelsea -- but hasn't been in the knockout stage often enough lately to merit consideration with this group; Milan is 5-4.)

Odd that almost all of United's games against the others are against Chelsea, Barca or Milan. Barca has wins over 6 of the 8, missing only Inter and Liverpool. They've played against all of them. Arsenal and Bayern have been plenty unlucky to face very strong sides in the early rounds, but Arse hasn't beaten one of this power 7 in 5 years either (they beat Milan 4 years ago). Inter has had tough draws in the first round the last two years too, but won both.

I meant as in the past 5 years or so.

Spain and England have by far been the two best leagues in the world the past half decade.

4 of the past 5 seasons United have been in the Semi-Finals of the CL with 3 domestic championships (nearly a 4th) and now 3 of the last 4 years they have been in the CL Final with one win already to their name.

Barca have been in 3 of the past 5 semi-finals of the CL with 2 domestic championships (now all but a 3rd) and now 2 of the past 4 years they are in the CL Final with one win already to their name.

There is simply no argument which two clubs have dominated Europe the past 5 years.
