No, they really didn't. Even with massive voter intimidation and suppression and every dirty trick in the book, Nazis got less than half the votes and only a couple of million more than the socialist/communist alliance.

Germany in the late 20s and early 30s isn't a great comparison to our current time, in large part because it was far more chaotic with many warring factions (the KPD on the opposite side was viewed as just as much, or even more of a threat than the Nazis) and much less stable entrenched systems - but Hitler was still viewed as a kind of useful bumpkin that would be controlled by other forces in the government / society even into the mid-30s (and in fact, it wasn't until the Blomberg-Fritsch scandal in the 1938 that Hitler finally broke the back of the old aristocracy that ran the military).

I think you have to see how he does with his platform/ campaign promises. Certainly would say he should be given at least a year before one could measure the size of his penis.
