UNC's Top Fundraiser Resigns

Yeah, but they're pissed at Thorpe because they think that UNC was "too open and honest" with the NCAA, when the truth is the exact opposite.

Well then BURN THEM!

LOL. No seriously, my only point is that UNC fans do appear to be very upset with how Thorp has led the university over the last 2-3 years, contrary to what RSF suggested. You can debate whether they're upset enough, about the right things, etc etc., but they are def upset.

Board of Governors met privately with Thorp today and he got their nod of approval. Board members Ann Goodnight of Cary and Ed McMahan of Charlotte said Thorp is doing a great job leading a campus that hauled in nearly $770 million in research funds last year.

Is Ann connected to Jim of SAS. Seems Jim was a State guy....

I wonder if it's an NCAA violation for a booster to be banging a player's mom. Isn't that an extra benefit?

Dang, this is becoming an impressive list:

Blake
Wiley
Baddour
Davis
Nyang'oro
Crowder
Walden
Kupec
Tami Hansbrough
Thorp

WRAL reporting it now. Chancellor is "stepping down" according to sources. Another Tarhole bites the dust.

Including the long list of players with NCAA violations, it's really just a couple "rouges"...nothing to see here. It's totally obvious why the NCAA did not return a Lack of Institutional Control verdict. :tard:

Apparently Thorp is being allowed to stay until June 30, 2013. Bizarre. UNC is run by gutless morons.

Gonna take more time to raise to hush money for Thorp than it did for the coaches, tutors, etc?

Here's his email:

Dear Carolina faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends,

Today I am announcing what has been the hardest decision of my life ...
my intention to step down as your chancellor effective June 30, 2013.
I've decided that this is best for the future of Carolina.

I told UNC President Tom Ross yesterday of my decision. I also let him know that I am willing to stay longer, if needed, to avoid any gap in leadership until the Board of Trustees, President Ross and the Board of Governors can name a successor.

I will always do what is best for this University. And what is best right now is for me to make plans to step aside. This wasn't an easy decision personally. But when I thought about the University and how important it's been to me, to North Carolinians and to hundreds of thousands of alumni, my answer became clear.

Over the last two years, we have identified a number of areas that need improvement. We have a good start on reforms that are important for the future of this University. I have pledged that we will be a better university, and I am 100 percent confident in that. We still have work to do, and I intend to be fully engaged in that until the day I walk out of this office.

Together, we have accomplished so much. Student applications are up by
24 percent. Our faculty has made us a top 10 university in research funding. We have made excellent progress with faculty retentions. More alumni and friends made gifts to the University last year than ever before. We have pulled the campus through the financial crisis, emerging as a stronger institution. And we have launched a campuswide initiative to define our vision of the 21st Century public research university.

It has been a privilege and honor to lead this great University, and I look forward to continuing to work with you. My love for Carolina, where I have invested three decades of my life as a student, faculty member, researcher and administrator, has only grown deeper with the time I have spent as your chancellor.

With great appreciation for all of you and what you do for Carolina,

Holden Thorp

WRAL anchors just reported that the BOG actually tried to talk him out of resigning. I guess that they'll have more info online about that later.

Edit: Sorry, it was the BoT that tried to change his mind.

Wade Hargrove, chairman of UNC-Chapel Hill's Board of Trustees, said he and other trustees tried to talk Thorp out of resigning.

"Holden has the full support of the Board of Trustees," Hargrove said in a statement. "I respect his unwavering commitment to always do what he thinks best serves the university. Holden Thorp has done an exemplary job as chancellor, especially in improving a wide range of processes and academic and fiscal management procedures.”
