Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Hope we land a good LB and the 6-6 TE, would round out the class nicely. Also want to keep Flowers ... He could make a deadly 1-2 with Beal.

With Clemson, FSU, NC State (this year), Louisville- the Atlantic is as competitive as any in college football. Clawson & staff are recruiting and developing the program to be competitive at the top level. No small achievement.

Greene will be really good but I wouldn't expect him to be a big contributor right out of the box even with his lofty recruiting ranking. He's got everything you want but will have to get a lot stronger, adjust to the competition, and get more physical in general. The competition he plays now he isn't on the field with another D1 guy other than 2-3 games a season and he still fancy's himself as a basketball player playing football rather than a football player. He will have an adjustment period to the physicality of D1 corners and how quickly he contributes will be a factor of how he adjust to that physicality. All the tools are there though. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Greene might even redshirt, depending on the deph situation. Referring back to the last great MA Bear to play WR for WFU, James Brim, James probably should have redshirted but didn’t because he was such a huge recruit for Groh. James wasn’t ready physically to play in the ACC. He got better every year and was All-ACC as a junior and senior. I foresee the same type of career for Greene. Heck, even Dortch redshirted his first year.

Not sure it pays to redshirt a 4-star recruit, although with the new rules perhaps it's not as big of a deal.

If he isn't going to be a big contributor his freshman year (i.e. Mike Allen), it definitely makes sense. There are 350+ composite 4 or 5 stars every year. Only a small fraction will get the chance to leave early and be drafted.

I do agree that coaches have to have a better eye for who can and cannot contribute in year 1, however, to maximize a player's utility in the event they do leave early. The new redshirt rules should definitely help with that, by getting true frosh legitimate game time (even if against cupcakes) in the first few weeks.

Dortch is listed an inch shorter and 15 lbs smaller than the best WR in the game. If he has the season we think he will have, he will get drafted.

Which means in reality 2 inches shorter and 20 lbs lighter. :)

There are also players that transfer as graduate students. Playing a 4 star recruit as a true freshmen would be better than watching that 4 star recruit transfer for his RS SR year to another program.

4 star recruits typically aren't going to want to redshirt. Clawson certainly seems like he will be able to continue to recruit talent so let's play the best players that give us the best chance to win each year.

The new redshirt rule is interesting too. Do those games have to be during the first few weeks or can the Coaches pick and choose what games the players play in throughout the season?

Pick and choose whenever they want to use the 4 games.

I think Clawson can tell 4* recruits that they’ll play against the FCS and easiest FBS opponent depending on the score and they can earn playing time against two other opponents.

Next year we open against Utah State, at Rice, UNC, and Elon. There’s definitely chances for Greene to get on the field and earn playing time. I’m guessing Clawson would play him against Utah State, maybe Rice, not UNC, and definitely Elon, then save him for depth for one or two more games unless he kills it.

My biggest worry in holding on to Clawson. Hope he is 100% committed to Wake. He and has staff are killing it. So much better than what Grobe did after Orange Bowl

I’m not worried. Clawson’s background suggests he will dedicate 110% effort to bringing championships to Wake as long as the Winston food scene keeps improving.

Plus we need to:

1) Set new attendance records for our home schedule.

2) Back up the money truck for Claw and staff.

I hear Dortch's 40 time isn't great. That will hurt his prospects

He’s lightning quick and elusive. Ricky Proel was slow until he was running under a pass. Dortch’s 40 speed shouldn’t hurt him too much. He seemed pretty damn fast last year. I can’t recall him getting run down from behind even once.

My very unofficial scholarship count for 2019 is currently at 87. Projecting scholarships is difficult because there is probably turnover that I am not aware of, and the scholarship status of specialists and former/current walk-ons is sometimes unclear. Plus, Clawson is becoming more transparent about the use of greyshirt offers. So it will all be managed. No worries there.

With all of that being said, having tracked this for a few years the class usually cuts off in the summer when the count reaches 88-90. So 2-3 more commits this summer seems like a good guess (assuming we hold onto Flowers). I have a hard time believing it could go much higher than that.
