Wake Forest Football Recruiting

These early 2024 commits will redshirt in 2024, barely see the field in 2025, and start to contribute as rSophs in 2026. So it's probably 3.5 years until we notice these guys on the field.

But that's how it works.

(Also worth admitting one or two of them will blow up and decommit)

While this is probably true for most of the guys, as we start recruiting at a higher level more of them will be ready to contribute in the first and second years than what we are used to seeing.

Certainly hope so.

Are we looking at the other offers to determine our increase in recruiting abilities? Because the guys we are getting are all still 3 stars. Hines is top 500 per 247, which is noticable, but the others seem to be in line with the average type of guy we have gotten the past several years.

This class already has 5 players in the top 750. Last year's class had 4. The 2022 class had 3 (small class). The 2021 class had none.

FWIW, also think WF is getting more credibility among those that rank football recruits. So, if WF offers a kid, he's getting more of a bump than he used to. That's the impact of year after year, WF getting rated below UVA, GT, VT , BC and other crappy programs in recruiting rankings, yet having better seasons than those programs on the field every year.

Realize that this is well worn material on this thread, but anyone believing that 247 or any other recruiting service can reliably rate the #637 FB recruit versus the #849 FB or even the #1153 FB recruit is fooling themselves. The football staff hosts these recruits in camps, they study their HS tape, they talk to their coaches, opposing coaches; so, as history has shown Clawson and staff are better at evaluating recruits than the services do at ranking recruits (which is hardly a revelation because that's perhaps the most important part of college football coaches job and why the recruiting ranking guys are not highly paid football coaches). That's also why several commits blow up after WF offers because other coaches know WF is excellent at evaluating and projecting HS football players; so, after Clemson offers a kid that WF has previously offered, that recruit suddenly becomes a 4 star.

Or more

I do think Clawson is great at finding guys that fit. I also think he is a damn good coach that gets the best out of young men individually and as a team. I’m not sure how wrong our recruiting rankings are vs how good Clawson is at coaching them.

There are a lot of players out there. The recruiting service guys can effectively evaluate only a fraction. They concentrate their efforts on the top 200 or so and then the kids being looked at by the bigger fan base schools. That leaves a lot of guys who are lightly evaluated.

As noted above, Wake staff does thorough evaluation on a limited number and picks the guys that fit what they want. Note that Wake gives out relatively few offers. The staff offers guys they truly want on the team. Wake offer is starting to mean more. Other evaluators are paying attention.

Wake has been signing "infereior" classes and kicking butt of "superior" classes. People are noticing. Wake recruits are getting a bit of a bump up. Results matter, eventually.

More and more of our non-lineman recruits will likely begin to play earlier, particularly in positions of need.
