Wal-Mart Opts Out of Safety Agreement in Bangladesh

The average Wal-Mart customer has no idea what happened in Bangladesh. Are they still going to provide cheap wares to Lower and Middle America? They'll be fine.

There is a book written last year called "Overdressed: The High Cost of Fast Fashion" that talks a lot about how horrid the conditions our clothes are made in. Some Pit'ers might find it interesting.

WalMart pays its workers in Bangladesh under $50/ MONTH.

Shopping at WalMart s basically supporting slave labor wages.

Go to Target!!!!

Couldn't agree more; no way I'd ever even step into a WalMart.

Where does that rank in terms of the average worker in Bangladesh? It's a little misleading to compare their cost of living to ours. Which is what you've done by not framing that number in any useful way. I'm no Wal Mart lover but you'd help your position a lot by providing more than just random numbers meant to be inflammatory.

Target is shady in many respects too (Google is your friend). They both are fairly miserable imho but my son can get enough of Archer Farms Monster Mix so to Target I often go.

Per capita income in Bangladesh is $848 (which includes millions of unemployed).

WalMart pays $43/month or $516/ year.

They pay only 60.8% of per capita income.

If go by per capita of GDP according to CIA World fact book. The number rises to about $2000

60.8 % is more than they pay in the US, isn't it?

The clothing at Target is also made with slave labor wages. Read the book I mentioned.

Target is still only considering joining (as of last night, at least, not sure if they made a decision this morning or not).

GAP also opted out of joining in on this Safety Agreement, btw. They deserve some of our ire as well.

Thanks for including that. I assumed you knew that information but hadn't posted it. It helps to have some frame of reference.

Per capita income in the US was $42,693 in 2012. 60% of that is $25,615, which I imagine is generally equal to what WalMart pays its employees here.
