Welcome Dave Clawson - 430PM Presser (Clawson Wins Presser, OGB Gets E-Boners)

Grobe gets a buyout for voluntarily resigning? WTF? No way. If we're paying him a buy out that means he was pushed out.

Thinking the same thing! You resign and there should be NO buyout. Something's fishy here but why should I be surprised. So we'll have the Grobe albatross around the AD's neck for several more years right? Just friggin' brilliant.............

Note: Just saw BabyDeacs explanation....

I don't think many of our fans appreciate how tight our budget is compared to other BCS schools. Not only do we have a much smaller fan base to draw funds from (both through tickets and fund raising) compared to the other BCS schools, but we are also at a severe cost disadvantage compared to almost every other school because of WFU's high tuition.

For example, WFU's tuition costs for football alone is over $3.8MM a year (85 Scholarships @ $44K). That is $1.2MM more than UNC (85 @ $30K), and that assumes they all are paying out of state tuition. And UNC is one of the more expensive schools in the ACC, schools like Clemson and NC-State are even less. Once you factor in that we also have to pay for B-Ball, Baseball, Soccer, etc... we are at a multi-million dollar short fall compared to almost every other BCS school that needs to be made up just to stay even with other schools. That really puts a strain on any coaching/facility upgrades we might want to undertake. Yes, other private schools such Duke, Vandy, USC, Northwestern, and Stanford have this same problem, but they also have larger enrollments and have endowments 3.5x or more the size of ours, to help ease the pressure.

Because of this, Wellman might not be low-balling anyone. We just might not have much more than $1.0-1.3MM to spend on a new guy (and honestly I have no idea how we ever afforded Grobe's $2MM a year. My only guess is a couple alums stepped forward to cover the difference).

Wake doesn't really disclose too much about the athletic department budget/profit since it's a private school, but looking at the financial statements it appears that any athletic revenue and expenses would be classified as "auxiliary" revenue and expense, which totaled $77.5MM revenue and $76.5MM in expense, for a profit of $1MM. It appears this includes all athletic, food, and student housing revenue and expense for the university. I have a hard time believing we are losing money on Food or Housing, so our department as a whole may really be losing a lot of money.

you do realize that's not the ACTUAL cost to send anyone to school, right? the actual costs are on the same level across the board for the most part.

No do you realize out of state athletes get in state tuition?

I started a new thread about the buyout rumor so more folks can see it, cause frankly I'm shocked, but maybe I should delete it and just let that discussion remain on this thread?

It could just be a situation where Wellman told Grobe he could keep coaching under his contract or he would pay him his buyout if he did want to resign. And Grobe decided to take the 2mm and find a new job.

That would be incredibly irresponsible. Scandalous even.

Don't see anyway it wasn't about Lobo. Even those close to Grobe say he is way too loyal to his staff. This isn't just some opinion the board came up with.

We were one of the schools that made a profit in athletics last year, IIRC. This poor Wake Forest thing is utter bullshit

According to the Rams club and Deacon club website's, Wake' Total Scholarship costs (all sports) were about $12MM+ this year. UNC was around $10MM (and they have more scholarships to fund, due to more sports). I think my costs sounds about right.

If we can really only afford to pay a coach 50-60% of what the rest of the schools in the conference are paying, then there are only 2 options:

1. Completely clean house in the AD department and bring in people with the competence to finance and run a major college athletic department, or

2. Drop down to a lower level in order to compete on a level playing field.

Personally, I don't think that number 2 is what needs to be done right now.

So, if true, RW knew he'd have to weigh in the annual buyout cost with the new HC's salary. And he really though he could get a decent coach with a low ball offer of around $1M a year? You have got to be sh***** me! That strategy sure is working out now, isn't it?

Based on that, we should bail out of the ACC since we can't be competitive fiscally or athletically. And stick to what we do best: academics.

Damn, I knew I should have waited before sending in my meager annual DC donation....:wtf:

So we are moving from paying our HC one of the highest salaries in the nation to being unable to afford a good mid-level coach?

do you know if those numbers are based on supposed tuition per student or actual cost to the school? that's all i'm saying...that those two things aren't the same.

yes, and you have missed my point. A regular student pays X amount to attend any school. It costs the school far, far less than that for services provided.

According to the latest financial statements, if you backed out donor's contributions our school loses money.

Revenue of $338MM and expenses of $331MM, for a profit of $7MM. Revenues include donor contributions of $20MM.
