Wellman Playing Tricky Hand - ACC Sports Journal

Good article. It makes the Bz hire that much more baffling because Wellman really needed to "win the press conference" in order to make the moves necessary to keep our basketball facilities up to date.

great article. Hard to believe that Wellman really thought Bzz would bring in enough excitement to the program to get enough money to build a new stadium or buy the joel. The more we learn about the status of Wake athletics, the less this hire makes sense.

Without regard to Bzz or the present state of Wake basketball, we need to buy the Joel. This is a move that will have a huge impact on Wake basketball for many, many years after Bzz is long gone, and we need to take this opportunity.

I believe the author agrees with you. However, it appears that we lack the financial wherewithal for such a move at the current time. Our financial situation and the excitement of our fan base are not completely unrelated to current status of our bball program.

If the Joel is already losing $850,000 a year how would a Wake ownership change that? That is regardless of the state of our basketball program, as it has been losing money for years.

Damn great article. This hire could turn out to burn the progress of the program for decades.

IIRC wouldn't it be tax-exempt property since it would be owned by a university? It's also too much of a "jack of all trades, master of none" arena. Too large for basketball and HS graduations, too small for big name artists to perform. I'd imagine that we'd receive revenue for renting it out to high schools for ceremonies and to things like the MEAC Tourney

Yeah the article lays out how it is a flawed arena as it is not big time enough for huge acts and it is too big for popular niche acts. Renovating for millions of dollars seems foolish as it doesn't address the main problem the arena has with generating revenue. So it's either buy it and make a huge commitment to raze it to build a more appropriate arena (appropriate not just for basketball, but for sustainability) or don't mess with it at all.

Is there any cost effective way to put in a false ceiling to cut off the upper deck & reflect sound back into the arena?

Agreed. It's already over 20 years old. By the time a purchase is final and renovations are complete, it would be almost 30 years old.

That said, it seems most likely that Wake purchases the Joel and surrounding property on the cheap and just rolls with it until the economic climate for building a new facility and renovating the surrounding area improves. It would be much easier to envision this with a younger exciting coach.

Wake really needs to capture the parking proceeds, that would make a nice difference to the bottom line.

Maybe POTUS will give Wake one of those 500 million industry bailouts he's been handing out like cheap candy.

Wake can make batteries in the annex and dig a lagoon for algae?

This thread is definitely the place to bring up some inane political point.

Well done, William.

I like the thoughts of an arena that holds about 9,000. When we're good, it'll be near impossible to get a ticket but until then..at least it'll be small enough to not look so bad with 40% capacity.

Bulldoze the Joel....

I'll give $5K right now if they commit to buying it, razing it, and building a new arena. I dont care who the current coach is. That should at least cover lunch for the ground breaking ceremony.
