WF Tennis (WS Open Starts Saturday)

To wrap up the NCAA info, McDonald (UCLA) beat Mansouri in the round of 16 and then went on to win the NCAA championship over M Torpegaard (Ohio State), who is the guy that beat Petros in the final 8. The team that beat Mansouri/Seraphim in the quarters advanced to the finals and lost to McDonald/Redlicki (UCLA), making McDonald the first guy to win both the singles and doubles NCAA titles since 2001.

The final NCAA rankings are out. The men finished #8, with Mansouri #14, Chrysochos #18, Mansouri/Seraphim #9, and Bogaerts/Kan #55. The women finished #29, with Guerin #67, Davis #107, and Guerin/Ulyaschenko #44.

postseason tournament at uga next year and wake in 2018.

Are these the highest post season rankings the men and women have ever achieved?

Good question. My initial thought would be yes for the men and no for the women. Keep in mind that the women had a completely dominant player in Bea Bielik back around 2000 - she won the national championship. I'll look into it further later tonight.

Congratulations to the men's tennis team for the finest season in their history and to the women's tennis team for their best record since 2002 and first NCAA tournament appearance since 2009.

It's the highest year-end ranking for the men. The women ended 2000 ranked #5 after reaching a program high of #2 earlier that spring.

Alex Lazarov took it on the chin today, 6-4, 6-1, to fellow 18 year old, Corentin Dennolly, who was one of the top juniors in the world last year.

The women were a powerhouse in the late 1990s, early 2000s. Won the ACC regular season one year I believe, and made the NCAA quarterfinals multiple times. Also had a player win the NCAA singles championship

UCF hired John Roddick away from Oklahoma

We better be ready to pony up if we want to keep Bresky for awhile

UCF has a draw that no other school in the country has - the new USTA Home of American Tennis training facility. It will have more than 100 courts and UCF will play their matches there. http://www.lakenona.com/community/usta/

Wake also has a draw that no other school has - it is host to an ATP 250 event, the Winston-Salem Open.

Jon Ho won his 3rd straight match this morning to qualify for the main draw of the Charlottesville Future. He won 6-3, 7-6 over Beck Pennington, a top player at Kentucky, to qualify. He'll play his first round main draw match Tuesday or Wednesday.

Keivon Tabrizi lost 2nd round qualies in Turkey.

Alex Lazarov got another WC into the main draw in Bulgaria and should play tomorrow.

Noah Rubin plays 1st round main draw tomorrow on grass in Surbiton at the Challenger level. He will play Wimbledon qualies after that.

Incorrect. The University of Memphis plays its home matches at the Racquet Club of Memphis which hosts the Memphis Open, an ATP 250 event. Usually one UofM player gets a wildcard into qualifying and there is another wildcard spot for the winner of the USTA Southern Indoor Tournament, also hosted by the same club, which most of the college players enter.

I stand corrected - you're absolutely right. Thanks for the info.

Seems like Rubin withdrew with an ankle injury.

Yes, I understand why UCF is a much improved job now. But it's still not a top 5 job in college tennis, just as Wake isn't. Facilities aren't everything or even most things

Ho takes on Greg Jones this AM in Charlottesville 1st rd. Jones is an Aussie ranked 700 in the world. A tough, but winnable match.

Alex Lazarov just won his 1st rd match in Bulgaria over a top 500 player. He was unranked on May 15 and now sits at 1100. He will be a solid 3 or 4 next year. Keep in mind he isn't coming until Jan.

I think the head coach is, by far, the most important variable in college sports. After that I think the next most important variable is facilities, and then it's a mixture of location, history, and academics. The head coach and facilities combination allows for excellence in recruiting, which is the lifeblood of college sports. This is why if you put a bad coach in charge of UNC basketball (Doherty) they go 8-20, or in charge of UK basketball they get routed by Gardner-Webb and go to the NIT (Gillispie), or you put a great coach in charge of Butler (Stevens) and they go to back-to-back NCAA final games. In tennis, Boland took over a terrible UVA program and made them in to the top program in college tennis (they have won 3 of the past 4 national championships). Roddick did something similar at OU, taking a mediocre program and making them elite, with 3 straight NCAA final match appearances. I think a "top job" in college tennis is one with support of the administration, great facilities, and a top coach - both UCF and Wake have that right now.

Thanks for the updates - keep 'em coming!

Ho lost 6-1, 7-6 today.
