WFU Hoops: '21-'22 Roster Construction Thread: +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

Triton College is in the house! I did not think I would ever say that in my life. Alondes dunked more in that video than our entire team did last year.

He will be one of very few students at Wake who was once a student at a junior college. Wake used to enroll 50+ juco grads every year. (Mostly non athletes.) But no more.

OK, the Board majority has spoken. Hope Williams dunks his way through the ACC and leads the Deacs to many glorious wins.

If we have actual butts in the seats at the Joel this year and he throws down a couple dunks like that LD Williams style, the fans will at least make some noise.

For impact on the 2021-2022 Deacs among incoming players, I’ll go

LaRavia

<gap>

Monsanto
Walton
Hildreth
McCrae
Williams
Taylor

Regarding Williams, someone said it best OTOB.

We won 6 games last year.

Williams was a started for a very good Oklahoma team for 20 games before getting COVID. Anyone who doesn't think he plays a significant role for us next season isn't looking at the big picture.

Adding Williams guarantees we can have a 7 man rotation of players with some experience.

Whitt
Williamson
Williams
Monsanto
Mucius
LaRavia
Walton

Yep.

Maybe none of those guys will blow the doors off by themselves, but if they can get some practice time in to gel, I suspect that we will at least resemble a basketball team for the first time in several years.

Yes

Exactly. And these guys are steps above the guys we had last year. Walton and Williams were starters on P5 NCAAT teams. Monsanto was SoCon FOY. LaRavia was MVC All-Frosh in 2020 and 2nd Team All-MVC in 2021 with the second most votes among sophomores.

DuBose was our best player last year and he was the leading scorer on a 4 win low major team. Antonio was a solid streak shooter but he was a rotation guy for a mediocre UNLV team. Jalen Johnson and Isaiah Wilkins barely played for P5 teams.

We should improve significantly. We return contributors. Tariq should give us something. The frosh guard are exciting.

Just numbers for day dreaming.

The combined per game statistics of Whitt, Williamson, Williams, Monsanto, Mucius, LaRavia and Walton in 167 combined minutes. 65.2 points, 28.9 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 6.3 steals and 11.5 turnove

Wake Forest per game averages for last year. 66.3 points, 32.6 rebounds, 11.5 assists, 6.2 steals and 13.6 turnovers.

The averages for 200 minutes of the seven players with experience. 75.9 points, 33.6 rebounds, 12.6 assists, 7.3 steals and 13.5 turnovers. 10 more points per game. One more rebound, assist and steal. Same number of turnovers.

Add 10 ppg to the Deacon total and last years record improves from 6-16 to 12-10.

Never heard of this guy, but this is interesting information.

#14 Walton
#58 Monsanto
#64 LaRavia
#69 Williams

We've got four of his top 100. I guess he hadn't updated.

Some familiar names for comparison:
#7 Walker Kessler (UNC to Auburn)
#26 Jordan Goldwire (Duke to OU)
#80 John Newman (Clemson to Cincy)
#94 Braxton Beverley (State to EKU)
#98 Shakeel Moore (State to Miss State)

His ranking of players who transferred out of Wake supports the upgrade narrative:

#312 Jalen Johnson
#371 Ody Oguama
#537 Ismael Massoud
#571 Jahcobi Neath

We lost unproductive players from a bad team and gained productive players from decent to good teams.

More information. Offense/Defensive rankings:

#75/#12 Walton
#120/#59 LaRavia
#55/#94 Monsanto
#80/#95 Williams

This rating also estimates position (PG to C 1-5) and role (creator to receiver 1-5)
C Walton 4.5/2.5 - PF/C who can pass out of the post
SF LaRavia 3.4/1.5 - point forward
SG Monstanto 4.1/3.0 - undersized PF who create his own shot
SG Williams 2.8/2.4 - wing who can get his own shot

  • Est Position: An estimate of a player's position based on his individual stats and team contributions. An estimated position of 1 corresponds to being a point guard, and a 5 corresponds to being a center. This estimate comes from Daniel Myers' Box Plus Minus 2.0.
  • Role: An estimate of a player's offensive role based on his individual stats and team contributions. An estimated position of 1 corresponds to being the “creator” in the offense, and a 5 corresponds to being the “receiver”. This estimate comes from Daniel Myers' Box Plus Minus 2.0.

Interesting that Newman is rated #80 in those rankings. Newman averaged 3 points a game for Clemson, and shot 34% from the field and 25% from 3 in 2020-21. He could not have been more of a non-factor last season.

Newman has a negative offensive rating. He is the #2 defensive player on this list.

According to these ratings, DuBose was our only player with a positive rating.

Definition of terms:

  • OBPR: Offensive Bayesian Performance Rating reflects the offensive value a player brings to his team when he is on the court. This rating incoroporates a player's individual efficiency stats, and also accounts for the offensive strength of other teammates on the floor with him, along with the defensive strength of the opponent's players on the floor. A higher rating is better.
  • DBPR: Defensive Bayesian Performance Rating reflects the defensive value a player brings to his team when he is on the court. This rating incoroporates a player's individual efficiency stats, and also accounts for the defensive strength of other teammates on the floor with him, along with the offensive strength of the opponent's players on the floor. A higher rating is better.
  • BPR: Bayesian Performance Rating is the sum of a player's OBPR and DBPR. This rating is the ultimate measure of a player's overall value to his team when he is on the floor. A higher rating is better.
