WFU Hoops: '21-'22 Roster Construction Thread: +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

Holy shit. First time I've really paid much attention to him. I know it's a highlight reel...surely there's something wrong with his game that doesn't show up in the highlights to only average 6 points last season? Because he looks like he'd be the best player on our team in those clips.

My thought exactly. Guy could be a contributor offensively at least.

I don't think it's a stretch to say Williams, Monsanto, or LaRavia would have been our best player last year.

Initial reaction: It’s a stretch. Especially Williams given his lack of outside shooting success at OK.

Delayed reaction: I’m not sure who our best player was last year… Williamson or Mucius? Maybe this is accurate.

Williamson, without question.

Nothing in Winston-Salem Journal re. Khadim's commitment. For those of us who reside outside of North Carolina, what is the best area newspaper to follow re. Wake Forest hoops?

It's 2021...try something other than a newspaper.

I was a long time Journal subscriber, but that publication is pretty much worthless now. Really poor Wake coverage since Conor left.

I think people are sliding Sy to PF to avoid giving Mucius a bunch of minutes at PF.

That's good info, OldGold. Thanks.

I don't think Sy changes projections that much because Ody was going to take those minutes anyway.

The KenPom breakdown shows we have plenty of minutes left at SG and SF and Forbes did a great job recruiting players who can fill those minutes.

I feel pretty confident we'll never see Walton/Sy/Tariq on the court together. I also think we'll see LaRavia as a small ball 5 on occasion depending on the matchups. Walton's ability to hit the 3 suggests gives us lineups with 5 shooters so we won't need a small ball 5 that much.

LaRavia will play about 28 minutes at PF. Mucius and Monsanto will play 48 minutes at SF and PF minutes. The rest will be 3 guard lineups

Whitt and Williamson should play the PG minutes. Maybe McCray gets some minutes there as well.

The rest is Williams and the true frosh. We'll see what they have to offer. Obviously someone isn't going to play much this year, but Forbes will have to convince them to stick around to take over the minutes Williams and Mucius leave behind. I doubt Mucius stays for a 4th year. He either goes pro or grad transfers.

Monsanto will be playing 0 minutes. Just learned from Conor's substack page (where he linked the WakeMBB twitter) that Monsanto is out for the season

WFU Hoops: Roster Construction - Added LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy

LOL. Go see the Monsanto out for the season thread.

So does losing Monsanto for the year change expectations for anyone?

I set the O/U at 14.5 wins before he went down.

I thought we’d be a little over .500 with an NIT bubble ceiling. I guess I still think that.

IMHO, losing Monsanto by itself doesn't move the needle. However, it reduces the depth at the 2//3 and removes one guy who could get hot and hit a bunch of threes in any given game. I could see him hitting something like 6/8 threes in some random game and that being enough to make a difference between a win and a loss.

His loss becomes more important if any of the other 2/3 guys suffer injury.

Yeah, I mean, we really don't have a 3 pt specialist. Williamson is our best shooter, which is why he will need to be on the court 28+ mpg

We don't have a 3 point shooter, but we'll have 4 or 5 guys on the floor who can hit threes. That's a bad thing if everybody has a green light. It's not as much of a problem if our guys can work to get open shots.

2020-21 three point shooting stats for the 2021-22 Deacs:

Walton: 9-19 .474
Williamson: 33-90 .387
Mucius: 27-74 .365
Whitt: 13-40 .325
LaRavia: 10-31 .323
Sy: 5-17 .294
Williams: 4-24 .167

Ingraham didn't shoot a 3. Monsanto was 49-137 (.358); so, Monsanto made 16 more 3s than anyone on the WF roster.

On the season, ACC teams shot 37.8% from 3. WF shot 35.1% last year (34.1% in ACC games, which was 12th in the conference); even so, 3 point scoring made up 41.7% of WF's offense in ACC games which was the highest percentage of points of any ACC team. Given those stats: a) 3 point shooting is not going to be a strength as Antonio led WF in threes made (Massoud was 2nd) and Antonio led WF in three point % (DuBose was third), and none of the incoming transfers are shooters; b) a larger percentage of WF's offense will come from 2s (hopefully dunks) and FTs; c) WF's offense will look a lot different next year (a good thing); d) hope that several Deacs make the jump from 3 to the 40% mark.

Unless, McCray, Hildreth or Taylor establishes themselves as dead eye shooter; can see WF looking for a shooter (maybe a transfer) heading into 2022-23.
