Why Do Men Folk Cling To Da Music They Grown Up With?

It's very simple, really. When we are young - high school/college- aged, especially - Music is important to us. We listen to it all the time. We follow the bands - when is the next album? when are they going on tour? We go to concerts. We go to frat parties. We dance. Music is near the center of our lives. Those songs become part of who we are. They are associated with the most fun and carefree times of our lives.

Then we get out of school and go to work. A million new priorities take the place of music in our lives. We don't have time to stay current. We don't have hours to devote to listening to, memorizing and dissecting the latest songs. We don't hang out at parties every weekend listening to the latest stuff. We don't form associations of newer music to awesome events like we did in college. The old associations remain.

I like newer stuff that I hear from time to time. some of it I like a lot. But, it is not the same. My go-to music is from my college years - and maybe the 2-3 years afterward when I was still regularly going to clubs and the like...

This is not true of everyone - some people stay clued in to the music scene. But it works as a generalization.

You know, I just like having the Freedom in this Beautiful World to listen to a Bombtrack that I enjoy. Definitely moreso than having to sit quietly, Calm Like a Bomb, listening to some shit singer when I'd rather put a Bullet in the Head of whoever's controlling the music.

Now I hate to Testify, but there is No Shelter from these shitty artists who can't Kick Out the Jams like those from when I was younger.

Presidents of the USA are pretty bad, I'll admit to that.

Listening to The New Pornographers right now. Didn't have that growing up.

Because life was awesome and care free when I was in high school and college.

:tard:

I heard once that one's favorite music is usually the music they listened to the most the first time they fell in love, but Google isn't turning up anything to support that.

Since I just found out that I am 7 years older than the average poster here, I guess I'll let you whippersnappers know that I made several references to a band called Rage Against the Machine in the above post. They were around back when we listened to these things called Compact Discs.

Yes, Reagan made all those people have unprotected ass sex. Evil genius.

I definitely still like the stuff I grew up with (though I'm not sure what era of "growing up" we're talking about -- middle school, high school, college?), though my musical tastes really evolved throughout those years and continues to evolve.

Definitely, you should remember fondly all the stuff that was playing while you were getting butt for the first time. Dave Matthews Band will continue to be remembered by my generation for years to come for that very reason.

Same reason they love their alma mater.

College education is the only product you buy where you later make donations to the seller. Anyone cut a check to Toyota because you love your Camry?
