Agree with both your points. Time is certainly an enemy on a normal business deal...however we have no idea when the contact began, thus have no real estimate on how much time has taken place since we contacted our top targets. Could be we have been putting out lines of communications for weeks, could be that we have communicated for a few days. It would not be surprising to see this last a few weeks given the magnitude of the decision for the prospective coach. Howland would sign today, of that I am sure, because he has no job. But if we are contacting coaches like Shaka, then they are going to be leaving a situation that is very acceptable to their career and their family. Thus, they are going to want to be very deliberate about the choice.
Patience is going to be the key in this one. We could hire a coach today if we wanted. Turner would be on a plane in 30 minutes if we wanted him. So I choose to believe that in this coaching search, time is somewhat of a mixed bag. Yes, in general it can cause problems in closing a deal, but in this case it also means we are pursuing worthy candidates. For some reason I have faith that Wellman is going to pull this off. Perhaps it is the Clawson hire, but whether or not we sign Shaka, I have a fair amount of optimism for our hire. Despite what Bz has done to our program, we are still in a great situation, and that speaks to the kind of job we have. We are not first tier, but in my opinion we are a solid second tier program.
