Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Somewhat related: I didn't want to go out on Saturday night because I knew I'd be worthless yesterday because of it. Did I say that and incur a bunch of shit from my bros? Of course not. I blamed my wife because they are scared of her temper.

So even if it was Maya who said "No" (big if), it wasn't really Maya saying no.

Haha I used to get the "blame" from my ex all the time. We would secretly get a good laugh out of it every time. Great tactic.

This makes a lot of sense. Paws in-bound. Suspect a Townie counter is in-bound, as well

Whatever he says is wrong.

ETA: I'd also add, without knowing much about Smart's aspirations and background before Medill, that if she really did want to become a writer and didn't have the experience, going to Medill is probably a solid way to get there.

It's just not that big of a deal.

Sure. J-School is where you go to get into journalism when you can't hack it straight out of undergrad, and that carries a stigma. Sadly the schools' enrollments have inversely mirrored contraction in the industry. They've become factories to prepare people for jobs that don't exist anymore. Places like Medill and CSJ are great institutions that will educate you quite well, but they're not that difficult to get into, and they don't really carry much weight or prestige in the industry because most media companies are run by people who look down on master's in journalism. This doesn't hold for every single case for every single J-School grad, but that's the general understanding even of the top master's programs.

Furthermore, I can name 15-20 personal friends with Medill degrees. I've taught students who have gone on to Medill and CSJ. I've worked with them as colleagues and been their supervisors at work.

Bottom line: Medill is a cool place where you'll get a great education and possibly get your foot in the door or broaden your career prospects. But it's not that prestigious in the industry, and you've got a better chance of becoming a "writer-at-large" than anything else.

Can't disagree with any of this, but it's more of a commentary on J-school than Medill. Still, points taken.

Townie is selling out his liberal tendencies and going to b-school though

So this might argument may have just ended with bdz's post

I love all of these dudes acting like they tell their wife what and when. I have found that any man that says he rules his wife either A) is lying or B) is in a shitty marriage. It is called a partnership folks.

Other than hiring Claws, is there something specific that you can point to in our Athletic Department's recent past that is not misguided? I may be wrong - but it just doesn't seem like the AD is worried about unifying the fan base.

Completely agree with you, but given the recent press you would just assume that the AD and school recognize the importance of this hire and what it could do to fan morale. It's been said before, our best hope here is that RW wants to cement his legacy with a big time hire. I don't care if his ego drives the decision as long as it's a good one.

FWIW as a creative writing minor from good ole Wake they had their other "big name " writer (besides Maya) in residence leave last year (McNally). If I were to consider a professorship type gig it would most certainly have to be delayed a year or two so there's no perception of "giving" a job away.

what year did this start?

there wasn't a creative writing minor when i was there and i took 5 classes from mcnally

Since we're just throwing things out there...I heard Mike White is no longer under consideration because he withdrew his name, Archie turned us down, and Tim Miles is/was a possible candidate.

TITSWF would be happy with Tim Miles.

Miles is a decent candidate. Not a home run hire like some other choices, but I would be pretty happy with Miles.

To hell it's called a partnership. For instance, I am building a new house right now. Here is how "choices" are made. Let's say we have to paint a room. She cares more than I do. So she pickes out 6 or 7 color options - most of them are really the same color so far as I can tell. Anyway, I'm asked for my input. I tell her any one of these three seem like good bets. Those three are then eliminated from consideration and we have 3-4 finalists for her to choose from. How's that a partnership? ;o)

Sage advice from a public masturbator

What the boards need to do is have everyone on the boards aggregate their giving so that collectively we have one voice who has influence to get #sources and get #bzzOUT, in the event history does repeat itself.

We have reached the stage of critiqing Shaka's marriage because of an entirely speculative post made from third hand information about his wife's possible thoughts on Winston. We need to take a step back for a second...
