Preseason Bahamas Basketball Thread

Fools gold for sure. McClinton can't play dead in a cowboy movie against ACC competition.
Unbelievably bad defense by the shockers.

I am not sure if McClinton has improved or it is just the quality of the opponents. For the first time, I am thinking he may be a net positive for 15 minutes a game. Probably just fools gold.

As long as Manning can have a 8-9 man rotation and stick with it i think this team wins 20 games. BC, Woods, Arians and Collins are a very good core.

The tour is more for the 10 extra practices we got beforehand. These games are just what we had to go through to get that.

And a free trip for the guys to see the Bahamas.

Bingo! This is all about the practices, and as a bonus the trip... People are thinking way too far into playing time during this trip.

Yep, I agree. Playing just 3 games against out manned teams would not develop much starter cohesion anyway, so Danny took the opportunity to reward the walk-ons and some guys who won't see many minutes once the real schedule starts. There was little chance they could discover some hidden gem on this trip and it most likely really helped the teams camaraderie and allowed the extra practices (as already stated) where the real coaching of the young/new players was going on. They still have almost 3 months to see what they have and decide which players can or can not help in real game situations, meaning that the walk-ons and others who can not help us win games will see very limited meaningful time on the floor. Barring injuries, I like the pieces on this team and now it is the coaches job to make them mesh into an ACC team that can win some games.

Five minutes of one game in over two seasons is hardly indicative of anything or Willie Green would be on his way to the HOF.

I'm gonna have to go with RJ on this one. I have yet to see anything from McClinton that says he can be anything other than a space filler. He isn't a great defender or rebounder. He isn't bad but he isn't great. And when you literally can't hit a hit from outside of 5 feet and you can't can't create offense off the dribble you need to be a great defender and rebounder to be valuable. Jamaal levy was a glue guy. He was a great defender and rebounder and it made up for offensive deficiencies. McClinton should be on the bench on any good basketball team.

Niki Arinze is the player you were referring to. McClinton was nowhere near as good as Arinze.

That comparison is laughable. Arinze was an incredibly explosive athlete, even after he lost a step or two.

Doral is definitely still a work in progress. With his size and athletic ability, he should have been able to dominate these guys on both ends of the floor. His bball IQ isn't quite there yet to allow him to do it. I still think Chill just has a natural PG mentality and knows how to handle the ball. Obviously Crawford and Collins are several levels above the Shockers athletically. Crawford has serious talent. Chill's a smarter player with the ball. Keyshawn is going to be good for us.

TVH's sole value at this point is to not make completely stupid plays and that he generally sticks to his man. Even in a game like this, nothing else about his game stood out. Good HS player, but man, his offensive game just does not translate at this level. He's just a somewhat glorified walk on. Wilbekin is a step up from that but behind the other guards.

It's been an interesting to watch all the guys get run against relatively inferior competition. Certain abilities stand out.

Agree on Doral. He needs to improve his focus and commitment or SJM will be seriously pushing him for PT. We can talk all we want about whether DM is a great big man coach but the players are the ones who need to put in the work.

I actually think Childress needs to improve his handle. He made several careless dribbling mistakes over the 3 games. I like his game but he's got some work to do, especially considering he will be the smallest player on the court most of the time. He's still better than Wilbekin right now but that's not saying much.

TITCR. I don't know if it is the knee injury or something else, but for someone who came in with a rep as an unbelievable athlete, McClinton has an amazing lack of explosiveness.

He is just a guy. If he wasn't 6'7" he wouldn't be playing at this level. I would love to see his minutes go elsewhere. In addition, I was hoping the Wilbekin would improve as he physically matured, but he looks pretty much like a 15 pound stronger version of his freshman self. I don't see any real improvement in skill set on either side of the court. MW's foot speed is just too slow to guard anyone. He causes a rotation on defense almost half the time, and that usually ends up with a wide open 3 point attempt on the other side of the court.

I haven't watched either of the last two games, but pretty much every time MW gets in the game, the person that he is guarding gets the edge on him off the dribble. This causes help side to force commitment early in the possession which gets us into a rotation. When you start a rotation so early in the shot clock it is almost impossible to keep them from a good shot unless you have elite defenders that can really scramble. The whole point of rotating is that you are trying to scramble for long enough to beat the shot clock. IF you can last long enough then the opponent won't have time to get a good look. MW forces us into the rotation too early, and we usually pay for it with a good long for the other team. It is really frustrating to watch for me.

It also causes a lot of fouls on our big men from when they have to rotate over.

My glue guy McClinton looks good. Making the right cuts for easy baskets as the 4th/5th option on O. He's going to be a plus positive on the court all season. Mark it down.

Concerned about Crawford's turnovers and Doral's BB IQ. Also, I expect Crawford to get into some shove-fights this year. He plays with nearly a Josh Howard chip on his shoulder. Me likey.

Also, happy to see Washington hit a 3, a jumper or two, and play the point. Interesting option at that position for us in spot situations.

Here are some thoughts after this week:

Bryant- He will be the clear team leader. He got bored playing against bad comp. He needs to concentrate more on D. I hope he plays 33-35 mpg. He's a 19/20 yo kid and we had 2-4 days between games. He played 31.7 mpg last year. This is a negligible increase. I'd like to see him play about 5 minutes/half as the SG with Brandon at the point. Bryant has a very good spot up three. His TO numbers need to come down slightly, not dramatically. Something many don't watch is he creates a lo hockey passes. His penetration pass leads to a second pass for an open shot. He could be a star this year.

JC - What I liked most about his play was the increased confidence level.Last season, he played nervous a lot, which is natural. The new attitude is really good. I'd like to see him play a lot of two man game with Austin. It should create a lot of space for both of them.I hope his defensive rebounding will improve. He could be the ACC's breakout player this year.

Keyshawn -He seemed bigger and stronger than I thought he'd be and is definitely a leader. His stroke is solid and knows how to ball fake and get an open 12-15' J. Needs to concentrate more on D.

Brandon - In the tapes I watched over the past two years, I was surprised he wasn't a Top 100 player. This week he showed Childress swagger and a very high level of court vision. I'd like to seem him play about 15-18 mpg., with half of them with Bryant.

Austin - Absolutely no conscience, good! I like the fact that he loves the wing three more than the corner or top of the key. It's easier to get open on the wing. He is a classic sixth man, but will have to play starter's minutes.I'd love to see him play a lot of two man game with JC. He will not play good D. Don't expect it.

Doral - this setting was not good for him. He didn't get to play with the starters that much. e had some good moments, but it didn't seem like his confidence level has increased. His talent is obvious. I hope he can grow into it this year. His play could really lift us. He's a good FT shooter and has a nice 8-12' J. I'd like to see him get a few of those off penetration. It would really open up the lane.

Wilbekin - I love how hard and smart he plays. I wouldn't be surprised to see him become a coach. Like a couple of other players, he seems to have developed a fake and mid-range J. This will be very useful for him. His big problem is he's too small to play SG and too slow to be a PG. He will be our fourth guard for the first half of the season. He's a good guy to have on the bench, but the fewer minutes he plays, the better we are doing.

Greg - Another guy who plays hard. Is a place holder as we are terribly thin at SF. His play this week was decent, but where and how he plays in ACC games is tough to place. One of the biggest problems is his lack of an outside shot allows opponents to take away driving lanes and pack it in against our bigs.

Wash- had some flashes of good play and some flashes of being a frosh. Each is to be expected. He has good size and really good length. His shot looks really solid. If he can lift his play to become the first SF off the bench and the fourth guard, we could be in good shape.

Donovan has a lot of work to do. He's bigger than I thought he'd be but seems to listen well and have a good bball IQ. Watch for him in February. He might start getting more time then or Danny may just use this season as a learning one.

Sam - Without question, he's a project. He needs to lose 20-30 pounds. The refs took him out of the games in the Bahamas. He did show excellent footwork in the post. He hit a good percentage of his baby hooks. that's usually something you have to learn. He challenges a lot of shots. When he gets defensive rebounds he keeps the ball until he finds the right guy to start the break. This is also very good for a young big who hasn't played against much comp. His FT form looks decent. If he had played in the US for all of HS, I think he would have been a Top 30 recruit. I hope he can make up the time.

Danny/Team - It was impossible to see much here. We wanted to get the starters and subs to play the system. Thus, we had to play JC or Doral with subs a lot and not together much. We will not be a good defensive team. If we cam play Doral with JC and/or Dinos, our rebounding could be average. With the additions of Keyshawn, Austin, Brandon and Wash, we will have three point shooting. We have to try to be a scoring team as we will give up a ton of points.

Good notes, RJ. I don't think Sam needs to lose 20-30 pounds though. He seemed pretty mobile. I think he's already lost 20-30 pounds. He could ADD WEIGHT actually, pretty easily, and probably should Add muscle, and turn a little more fat into muscle and you are probably looking at putting back on 15 pounds but lowering his BMI.

He needs some of the weight has. Then he could add weight in his shoulders later.

He's definitely mobile and agile for a huge guy. I am kind of amazed at how naturally he gets into position and makes the hook. His patience on the D boards is also something young bigs rarely have. I hope he doesn't get frustrated not playing much.

One thing about Crawford's TOs is that they do tend to go out of bounds. Another thing is you also have to look at the second passes his penetration creates.

Didnt really watch much of the games. Gotta say 3-0 for the Deacs is good no matter who the competition.

Nice to see Woods and goofy white dude will likely be contributors this year.

Most concerning note is Moore's seeming inability to dominate against what had to have been teams with no one nearly as big and athletic as he is. I really think for whatever reason Danny is harder on the big men. I hope he can ease up on Doral enough to let him grow and play. We need him.

Most of all I am just glad to see no Devin.

My qualm with number four is, why even classify it as "PF v. C" and just call it two big men. It'll vary depending on matchups anyways. Just semantics I guess though. I agree Collins is gonna start as the big guy inside.
