2016 College Football Coaching Carousel

So Louisville and Mississippi State just switched DCs. Allegedly, Louisville forced out Grantham and were just waiting for him to get hired before they hired the Miss State guy. Strange because Sirmon has only been a DC for a single, unimpressive year.

Bet the Grantham decision was driven by Wakeyleaks but I think they could have done much better with his replacement.

Grantham was the guy who accepted the info from Galloway and used it. There may have been some pressure from the league to encourage him to move on.

not coaching but rumors that phil fulmer might be going back to tennessee as athletic director

Funny in that they paid a search firm all this money and there he was, sitting there 10 miles away all this time, probably the perfect guy, just like Barry Alvarez has been at Wisconsin.

I don't see this as a perfect hire at all. What makes Fulmer qualified to run a massive athletic department like Tennessee? That he used to coach TN football during their glory years?

So, anyone want to take a wager that some sort of scandal is about to drop at Oklahoma? 56 year old healthy coaches don't typically just retire to "live life".

Yes, either a scandal or personal/family health crisis.

He's made about $40 million from OU over the past 10 years and just received (on June 1) a $700,000 retention bonus

OU deposited $200k into a retirement fund in January 2012 and 2014

There may be a scandal bigger than Mixon...or maybe another one like Mixon and Stoops decided he could go get by on his accumulated wealth

Frank Broyles, Darrell Royal and Jimmy Johnson all did.

Bill Cowher stopped coaching at 49.

As salaries have exploded, I think we will see more and more coaches retire while still young enough to enjoy life

How many beach houses do you need, and how much time do you want to spend there vs. in some recruit's kitchen in Waco eating bad chicken?

They said his father passed away of a heart attack at age 54 while coaching a high school football game. I'm sure that weighed heavily in his decision.

In the real world, it's not unusual for a 56 year old man to retire if he has made $40M over the last 10 years.

it is a shame because I had OU penciled in as my early pick to lose a national semifinal game by 30

I don't think it's a matter of the money. Most coaches on that level do it for the love of the game/competition, and building their legacy. You think Saban (or even more so, Bill Snyder) couldn't retire comfortably and still leave more than enough behind for their families?

However, I do agree that more young coaches in the coming years may lose that "fire", and be more comfortable leading a life of luxury rather than continuing the grind.

I think Stoops isn't Saban or Snyder

and I know coaches salaries have exploded relative to inflation, such that guys in their 50's are looking at guaranteed financial security for themselves and a few generations, if they choose, while 30 years ago that was not the case

There comes a time when you come to work and say to yourself "I've had enough". It could be that simple. He'll end up in a broadcast booth soon anyway.
