Totally Unofficial 2023/24 Premier League Thread

Down 3 important players today and Saka and Rice both possibly injured, things could turn for the worst real quick

Nketiah should’ve been off. But a pen + OG happen. Defending so much better than last season. Van de Ven looking like prime Jan Vertonghen
Mickey is a little week in the air vs. Jan, but his speed/recovery are something else and so important. He played a very composed game today. Definitely one of our most important players in terms of staying healthy (hope Maddison is okay!)

I thought he looked as composed today as he has in any match so far

Yeah I didn't mean to imply that he was not composed in other matches, but the level of competition and in particular the way they pressed made it all the more crucial.

Oh I didn’t take it that way. I took it exactly like you’d said. Considering the circumstances he looked great

For sure. I'm also trying (and failing) to get out of the habit of comparing current players to favorites from peak Poch years. They're all so young and going to develop into their own personas

Yeah. I loved that our average age today was bottom 3 youngest in the league (along w/Burnley and Arsenal) or whatever stat they were parroting on the broadcast. Feels a lot better than relying on Dier and PEH (fine off the bench but his legs have some miles on them) as our backbone.

Super Jan was a good comparison in that I think Micky is the first naturally left footed player we've had since him get a decent run at LCB. I could be wrong about that though.

The thing I like most right now is that I can’t think of a second half where spurs were worse than the first.

The playing out from the back is terrifying and sometimes it’s white knuckle in the first half, but always feels more composed in half 2. Whatever he is saying in his halftime team talk they are listening and applying.

After Pool this weekend, Spurs have a pretty favorable next few weeks. Let's get a result here and then the full points in October.

Darwin Nunez averages a goal every 141 minutes (it is a goal or assist every 107 minutes) for Liverpool. By way of comparison, Mohamed Salah comes in at 134 minutes per goal, Fernando Torres at 135, Luis Suárez 138 and Daniel Sturridge 140.

Hee haw.

Where are you getting 141 mins per goal? He's scored 14 goals (1 FA Cup last year, 9 Prem last year, 3 Prem this year, 1 Europa this year, which was a penalty) in 2275 minutes. That's 162.5. G+A of 20 (goal or assist every 114 mins.)

also, looking just at his performances in the league he has played 1918 minutes with 12 goals. 1 per every 160 mins played. G+A (16) every 120 minutes. So fairly consistent numbers with the above.

But, Darwin is overperforming his xG with actual goals this year due to his two great finishes against Newcastle where the xG was 0.4 - in the other 5 PL matches Darwin has featured in this season he has played 209 mins, compiled an xG of 2.2 and has scored 1 goal. That is much more in line with his performances last year and shows that Newcastle was likely an outlier creating lots of noise in the data due to small sample of matches played so far this season. 2022/23 PL xG was 12.1. He scored 9. Meaning he scored 3 goals less than an average finisher would have done. Hee. Haw.
He just isn't that good of a good footballer right now. He is an amazing athlete, however.
