2017 College Basketball Coaching Carousel (Matta out at Ohio State)

Patrick Ewing is still undeniably more famous/recognizable than Danny Manning in terms of a household name.

Obviously.

So what does it mean to be a Top 20 job? I really don't know anymore. Colleges like Xavier, Butler, and VCU just reload coaches and recruits without missing a beat. Gonzaga has kept the same coach and stayed on top.

I can see why Indiana, UCLA, and UNC are top programs because they're located in or near metro areas that traditionally produce a lot of basketball talent. Yet all three have slipped under subpar coaches. On the other hand, Purdue, USC, and NC State have similar proximity to those same areas and they aren't top programs. Kentucky and Kansas are top programs but don't have nearly as much local talent.

How much does tradition matter to kids born in the 2000s?

If Alford were to pass on IU (doubtful that happens) and Mack were to pass, where would IU turn at that point?

IU's top names (excluding Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan who are not interested) are Alford, Tony Bennett, Chris Collins, Chris Mack and Archie Miller. There is reason to believe that all five have some level of interest and all five are being vetted.

Boyton was an assistant for Underwood at both Stephen F. Austin and OK State. Big job for a first foray as a D-1 head coach. Somewhat reminiscent of the James Johnson debacle at VT.

OK. The Craig Escherick debacle at G'town, but I wasn't sure anyone here would remember that there was an unsuccessful assistant coach hire with no previous HC experience at G'town between Big and Little JT.

An assistant got promoted to replace a departing coach. How is James Johnson your first reference point? Cal just did the same thing a few hours ago. Why not reference Brad Stevens?

Would say the same about the Cal hire. How could anyone possibly compare this to the Brad Stevens hire?

When Butler hired Stevens he was the top assistant to Todd Lickliter, who successfully coached Butler for six years (left to take the Iowa job), and who was the top assistant under Thad Matta, when Matta's successful run at Butler ended to take the tOSU job. Matta was hired by Butler after he was Barry Collier's top assistant, after Collier's successful run at Butler ended for Collier to take the Nebraska job. There had been a clear line of succession at Butler. In other words, a coaching tree and a successful system at Butler for more than a decade that they wanted to continue. Makes sense. Does anyone really think the Butler line of hiring successful assistant after successful assistant is comparable to replacing Brad Underwood after one year at OK State with his assistant coach or Cuonzo Martin after two years at Cal with his assistant coach? Really?

There is no Brad Underwood coaching tree at OK State or anywhere else. Boyton merely followed Underwood from SFA to OK State. Maybe Boyton and Wyking Jones will be great at Cal and OK State, but it seems unlikely that out of all of the available coaching candidates (literally hundreds of D-1 Basketball head coaches and assistants) the best available candidate just happened to be an assistant already on staff for a marginally successful program. Both hires, like the James Johnson hire look like expedient decisions based upon convenience without a thorough vetting process. Maybe, both will workout wonderfully, but I doubt it.
