BBall Recruiting Thread 2k16- SJM, Washington, Childress & Mitchell sign NLIs; 2017?

  • How is it Wake has extended so many offers to players?
    • WF seems to offer a lot of players early in the recruitment but quickly narrows down the focus to select players. WF may offer a huge number of players but very few of them have committable offers right away. Most have conditioned offers that are at least predicated on the coaches and players getting familiar with each other among other factors.
    • Also, a lot of the offers are not really valid anymore but revocation of offers is almost never reported. So a lot of players & teams have moved on from each other while the offer still remains out there.
  • Also, what exactly does an offer mean?
    • There's two types of offers
      • "Committable" - The team will take the player on the spot (ex: Harry Giles)
      • "Non-committable" - The team has conditions before the player may commit, such as waiting on a higher ranked prospect at the same position, waiting on the recruit's AAU performances, waiting on test results, waiting to see who leaves the college team that year, etc.
  • If a school extends an offer and the player immediately says yes, is that binding (especially for prospects a few years out)?
    • No. Nothing is "final" until the player signs his LOI and financial aid papers. Players decommit sometimes and other times teams revoke the spot (Matt Colburn was the victim of losing his scholarship to Louisville for 2015).
  • Do schools routinely extend offers to every 5* player imaginable figuring they won't get many of them?
    • Some teams offer a lot of players. Other teams are very selective in who they offer. It's more of a recruiting strategy for the teams that offer a lot of players since getting offered means that a team is pretty serious about the player and helps the team get their foot in the door with that player. However, for 90% of those offered recruits you'll likely hear nothing more after the offer announcement.
  • Can an offer be withdrawn?
    • Yes, offers are rescinded all the time either because the team received a commitment from another player, the player got in trouble, the team "moves on" from that player, etc.

There are actually 6 players so far, that's not zero. The 2 last year are obvious. Based on all the reports from people here as well as the Duke guys, who I trust more than the recruiting "specialists", it sounds like all 3 this year are better than ranked. People have thrown out the notion that 2015 is the 'star' class aren't they? They certainly aren't ranked that way. A lot of people are talking about BC in 2016 and a friend I trust saw him in a HS game calling him a "steal"....plus I trust bloodlines. It sure looks like Manning is recruiting players playing higher than their ranking. Believe the recruiting "experts" if you want. I think Manning is chasing players that have sound fundamentals (teachable) and with potential high upsides....and which fit his style.

As for not living up to rankings....from the list on post 12735...

Top 75 recruits who didn't play that way: Jeremy Ingram, David Weaver, Skeen, Gurley, Ty Walker, Woods, Swinton was basically top 75 too. There were quite a few in the Odom era. I'm not saying they were busts as players, they just weren't really top 75 players that we need. Skip recruited a lot of local talent that was probably very overrated. That used to be common complaint on these boards.

<75 total busts: AW Hamilton, Cam Stanley, Henley, Joyce. I don't think we see these types of players with Manning...guys who obviously don't belong at this level from day one.

I still don't understand why Swinton was so highly regarded in HS. Not that I saw him in HS, but he seemed like he had zero offensive skills from day 1. Then there was the paintball incident like the first week of school... Geez. Skeen had the knee problems early, and admittedly after he got to VCU said he just didn't train hard enough and eat right and all that while he was at Wake. He said he really clamped down and did everything the right way when he got to VCU. Got the RORo work ethic with post college on the horizon. Not unusual for a guy to mature as an upperclassman. And he was VERY good his senior year. The game against Kansas to get to the FF, where he was called on to defend both of those twin centers (whose names escape me), and score, was as well played of a game as I've ever seen from anyone. Skeen was a top notch college player his senior year, but didn't get much recognition because that was when VCU was still under the radar. But agree with the post overall. Just still shake my head about Skeen and Swinton sometimes.

Yeah, Skeen is sort of on the fence for me because like you say, he played really well his senior year. I'm with you on Swinton. IIRC he was top rated in NC, yes?

Dinos listed at 245 and Doral listed at 265 now. Big gains 6 months.

this is huge if true, i am going to take TheishthatSavedwakeForests word on this one!!!

razorwfu said that Cornelius Hudson grew another inch to 6"7'+, and what the plus sign means is that he could be even taller than 6-7'! can you Imagine??? he could even be 6'-8 or 69". i see a team of giant men who are growing into giants and thats the best way to develop a program.... we are going to keep growing all of our players with supreme stength and conditioner programming, and we are going to sign giles and grow him to nine feet tall and then try to stop us!!

some people are questioning if hudson can grow because he is old,, but pourdeac says hes seen it firsthand and i believe him! if razorwfu and pourdeac and Dekin and jeff hustler all can confirm that Hudson is growing, what does that say about the doubters and what their agendas are and what they are trying to accomplish? i dont know but i think it is a question worth asking

Have bumped into Hudson 3-4 times over past few months and he looks every bit of 6'7

I saw him in high school several times, and also don't understand why he was highly regarded.

I think he and Weaver were playing on the same AAU team at a tournament at the Dean Dome. Everybody around me was more impressed with Weaver than Swinton.

I saw Swinton play once in high school. In the game I saw he put up an absolutely ridiculous stat line. It was something like 26 points and 20 rebounds. He hit several jump shots out to the foul line. I never thought he would be a star because of his size but I thought because of the system we were running that he would get six or eight points per game on alley oops and put back dunks.

The lesson from that is never make a judgment on a player from such a small sample size.

D Weave could stroke it from 3. You saw it in every warmup or on the Collins courts every weekday. Dude just played soft in the ACC.

Swinton peaked as a high school sophomore. He was top 25 in his class at one point, if I recall correctly. He was ranked based on projections that never panned out.
