Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Cubs at 100% to make the playoffs on Fangraphs, 99.5% to win the division.

Projected to hit 100 wins and take the division by 14 games or so over the Cards.

Any information on Tommy LaStella? He was optioned to Iowa a week ago and has yet to appear in a game. He is on the Iowa roster but a uniform number hasn't been assigned.

Update - La Stella is working out from home and not reporting to Iowa - but thats not what the Cubs want, and he likely cannot be recalled until he reports. I get him being angry, but he is acting like a spoiled brat. Grimm is doing fine with it.

Hammel was activated from the bereavement list and will start tomorrow. Grimm was optioned to Iowa to make room on the roster. I agree on La Stella and would not be surprised if his days with the Cubs are limited. Grimm is showing his commitment to his team and teammates. Two thumbs up.

Lackey with an impressive eight inning effort gets his ninth win in a 5-1 Cub victory. Contreras and Bryant with HR's lead the offense. You know it's a good night when Lackey doesn't complain about being lifted.

Lackey looked really solid last night. He was punished for that third pitch of the game that just hung a bit and was right down Main Street, but he really looked good. First five guys he struck out didn't even swing. Game went by pretty quickly last night, seemingly looked up and it was already the 7th. Bryant absolutely crushed that ball in the 5th down the left field line.

TLS thinking about retiring - he has lost passion for the game, supposedly, has not decided if he wants to report. Hoyer said they are not going to DFA him, but they are paying him.

How weird.

I hope Coghlan is practicing as an infielder as well as an outfielder. TLS ambivalence may have been suspected by Cub management and a factor in selecting Coghlan to replace him on the roster. Cogs also offers greater position versatility in the event of injury. How do you lose passion for the game when you're playing for a championship? Weird indeed.

Hammel with seven shutout innings earns his twelfth win and Chapman with a three K ninth earns the save as the Cubs beat the Angels 3-1. The money performance was provided by CJ Edwards retiring Trout, Pujols and Simmons in the eighth and maintaining the lead. He has been taking out the big boys for Maddon whenever needed since arriving from Iowa. Impressive.

Strop on the DL with a torn meniscus in the left knee and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks. Grimm recalled from Iowa.

One down, three to go.

Zach Duke bringin his White Sox stank to the StL

Or not. Loving this sweet sweet beat down of the Best Fans. 13-1 in the top of the 18th. Dingers galore.

Final. Cubs 13 Cards 2. Maddon put the kids on the field and they responded. Fowler, Heyward and Zobrist took a day off and with the exception of Montero and Rizzo everyone else has arrived from the minors over the past three years. Catch the highlights to see seven HR's. Yes the wind was blowing out.

Two down, two to go.

Though they're still going to find a way to get in and make life miserable for us in the NLDS. I just know it

Cubs lead 3-1. Bottom of the seventh. Bases loaded. Nobody out. Cubs fail to score. Cards breath deeply and exhale. They know they have dodged a bullet. Maddon gives the ball to Rondon to pitch the eighth despite not having pitched in 12 days. Rondon blows up (surprise!) and gives up four runs on two HR's. Wood relieves Rondon and gives up another run. Cards lead 6-3. You have to put the Cards away when the opportunity presents itself. They never quit.

Rizzo leads off the eighth with a HR. Let's see if the Cubs can reply.

They don't. Cards win 6-4.

All I want the rest of the season is not to see the Cardinals in the NLDS.

It isn't that much to ask baseball gods. Make it happen
