Spurs win 16th in row vs Wizards, 125-118 in 2OT

WASHINGTON -- After he reached his season-high 40th minute, after he scored his season-high 31st point, Tim Duncan fouled out in the second overtime, joining Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard in a talent-laden quartet not available for the final 4:13 of San Antonio's exhausting game at Washington.

The leftovers who finished the job did Gregg Popovich mighty proud, not an easy accomplishment for a coach who has just about seen it all.

Patty Mills scored 11 of his season-high 23 points in the two overtimes Wednesday night, helping the Spurs beat the Washington Wizards 125-118 for an NBA-high 16th time in a row, going deep into the well to maintain a streak that's more than eight years old.

"That's one of the finest wins I've ever been associated with, and I'm saying that truthfully," said Popovich, who has led the Spurs to four NBA titles. "For these guys, I couldn't be prouder of what they did. With Kawhi and Manu and Tony not out there, I thought the bench guys really stepped up."

Duncan also had 11 rebounds, and Danny Green added 22 points, but Parker left at halftime with tightness in his lower back and did not return. The Spurs, 2-0 in the early days of their nine-game rodeo road trip, already were without Ginobili (tight left hamstring) and Leonard (broken left hand).

Popovich said Parker won't play Thursday against Brooklyn. Asked if Duncan will be available, the coach joked that he's expecting 48 minutes from the 37-year-old forward.

"I am absolutely up for that," Duncan deadpanned. "Sounds like fun."

Washington hasn't beaten San Antonio since a 110-95 win on Nov. 12, 2005. The Spurs' win moved them ahead of Miami's 15-game domination of Charlotte for the longest current team-vs.-team streak in the league.

Tim Duncan has at least 30 points, 10 boards, and 5 assists for the 1st time in a game since Dec. 18, 2012 against the Nuggets.

MVP: Tim Duncan. The 37-year-old went for a season-high 31 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals in 41 minutes before fouling out, but his performance after Tony Parker left the game at half with a sore back was vintage.

Grizzlies set record for fewest FT attempts in shot-clock era

ATLANTA -- The officials were allowing aggressive, physical play, so the Grizzlies turned up the defensive pressure against Atlanta while setting an NBA record with only one free throw attempt.

Zach Randolph scored 20 points and the Grizzlies set a low-scoring pace in shutting down the Hawks 79-76 Saturday night.

Memphis's one free throw attempt is the record low since the shot-clock era was introduced in 1954-55, according to STATS.

Memphis players were astonished to see only one free throw on their stat line.

"Wow! Wow! Wow!" Randolph said. "That whole game -- wow!"

Randolph said he appreciated the officials allowing the physical play. "But sometimes, if there is a foul, call it," he said. "But, you know, let us play."

Courtney Lee, who had 14 points, made the Grizzlies' only free throw in the third period. The officials called only 22 fouls -- 12 against Memphis and 10 against Atlanta, which made 8 of 15 free throws.

The Hawks were held to a combined 25 points in the second and third periods and set a season scoring low after leading 29-27 following the first period. The Hawks, who were held almost 27 points below their average of 102.7, had a scoring flurry to open the game but couldn't maintain the pace.

"I think I looked up, they had 22," Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. "From that point forward they had 54 total. So we really clamped down."

Paul Millsap had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Atlanta, which has lost three straight. The Grizzlies ended a two-game skid.

Playing against the team that drafted him in the first round in 2009, DeMarre Carroll scored nine of Atlanta's first 17 points as the Hawks were sharp in the opening period. A 3-pointer by Millsap pushed Atlanta's lead to double figures for the first time at 22-12, and baskets by Elton Brand and Williams extended the advantage to 14 points.

Memphis scored the next 10 points as part of a 15-3 run to close the period. Back-to-back baskets by James Johnson gave Memphis its only lead of the half at 31-29. The Grizzlies lost the momentum as the Hawks led 43-37 at halftime.

Patty Mills scores season-high 32 to lead depleted Spurs by Bobcats
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Patty Mills said Saturday night reminded him a little of playing for the Australian Olympic team in 2012.

He was counted on to shoot, score and run the offense.

"The Olympics are fun," said Mills, who led all scorers in the 2012 Games with 21.2 points per game.

So was Saturday night.

Mills, getting added playing time for the ailing Tony Parker, turned in a near-perfect game, scoring 18 of his season-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-100 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats for their fourth win in five games.

Mills was 10 of 13 from the field, including 5 of 5 in the fourth quarter. He also connected on 8 of 9 foul shots and had four 3-pointers to help the Spurs defeat the Bobcats for the sixth straight time.

Parker started for the Spurs and played 26 minutes, but it was obvious he's not back to full speed after sitting out Thursday night with back spasms.

"It's important for all of us to step up, whether you're in the backcourt or not," Mills said. "We have managed to do OK without (Manu Ginobili and Parker). Everyone has been able to collectively step up."

Mills stayed in the game for the entire fourth quarter, and coach Gregg Popovich made sure he called plays to get him the ball.

"His motor is always going," Popovich said. "He doesn't need me to do anything to get him going. He's a competitor. He's played on the Australian Olympic team for I don't how many years. He's a competitor. He's not impressed with the NBA. He just comes and plays."

Tim Duncan finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his 22nd double-double of the season. Nando de Colo tied a career-high with 15 points, including two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to seal the victory.

He's back!

Chris Paul plays 23 minutes in return as Clippers rout 76ers
LOS ANGELES -- The Clippers expected they'd be better once Chris Paul returned to the lineup. They just probably couldn't have imagined how much.

Blake Griffin had 26 points, 11 rebounds and six assists Sunday night as Los Angeles stormed out to a 31-point lead in the first quarter with its All-Star point guard back on the court and pummeled the Philadelphia 76ers 123-78.

"It felt great just to play. You never know what it's going to be like until you actually get out there and compete," Paul said. "A lot of things go through your mind out there, especially when you come back because you want to make sure you're not too tired and not trying too hard. But at the same time, we've been playing extremely well and I didn't want to break up our rhythm."

Jamal Crawford scored 21 for the defending Pacific Division champions, who were 12-6 while Paul was sidelined with a right shoulder he separated Jan. 3 at Dallas. The seven-time All-Star point guard showed no signs of rust, getting seven points and eight assists in 23 minutes.

"He set the tone," Crawford said. "The energy from when he was introduced, to the level of play that he brings, it makes everybody better."

Irving scores 28, Cavs beat Memphis 91-83 in OT
CLEVELAND -- Interim general manager David Griffin said before the Cavaliers' game Sunday night that he'd like to see a few more smiles from his team.

Following Cleveland's 91-83 overtime win over Memphis, there were happy faces all around the locker room.

"The game is fun," said Kyrie Irving, who scored 28 points as Cavaliers won back-to-back games for the first time in a month. "Being out there, just competing at the highest level. At the end of the day, it's just a game."

The Cavaliers, who broke a six-game losing streak Friday night against Washington, have won both games since general manager Chris Grant was fired last week.

James Johnson scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to help Memphis erase a nine-point deficit. Cleveland led 74-65 but was held scoreless for 4:54 as the Grizzlies took a 78-74 lead.

Irving scored the final four points in regulation to tie it. Luol Deng's 3-pointer on the first possession of overtime put Cleveland ahead for good, 81-78.

While a two-game winning streak won't remedy all the team's problems in an adversity-filled season, the Cavaliers want to seize on any positive momentum they can find.

"Everybody was putting too much pressure on themselves," Irving said. "We needed to go out there and play basketball. Going out there the last two games, whether the game gets tight or gets away from you, it should be fun."

Nick Calathes scored 17 points to lead Memphis, which has lost three of four since winning six straight.

Yeah, definitely had a double-take when I turned that game on and it was 89-33 in the 3rd quarter.

Not a good night for the Deacs.

Pistons upend Spurs in John Loyer's 1st game as interim coach
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- With interim coach John Loyer hoarsely shouting instructions, Brandon Jennings and the Detroit Pistons ran away from the San Antonio Spurs in the third quarter.

Jennings finished with 21 points, and the Pistons beat San Antonio 109-100 on Monday night in Loyer's first game at the helm.

Detroit abruptly fired Maurice Cheeks on Sunday after only 50 games as coach, but although they've been unimpressive for the most part this season, the Pistons have played better lately. The comfortable win over the Spurs was Detroit's fifth in seven games.

"I told them it was going to be an emotional day," Loyer said. "I told them I thought we can play, collectively, for longer periods of time better than we have."

Rodney Stuckey scored 20 points for the Pistons, and Greg Monroe added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Marco Belinelli led the Spurs with 20 points.
