NFL is putting microchips in the footballs during the preseason and regular season Thursday Night Football games to determine how narrowing the field goal uprights would impact FG conversion rates. They want to attempt to dissuade FG attempts and encourage 4th down attempts.
Also seems like microchips could be helpful in the future for goal line and 1st down measurements.
Most of the articles I've read about technology in sport suggests the NFL is just hesitant to embrace technology, particularly coaches. Of course, once one coach wins using the technology, they'll all embrace it. It makes more sense for players to be tracked in football than any other sport.
The technology for 1st downs seems like an extension of the technology used at the plane of a garage door.
Tennis has had something like that for years although it's on the courts themselves, not the balls.
