Official 2015-2016 Charlotte Hornets Thread - Batum & Marv back, Lin, Al & Lee gone

They got a 2016-17 rotation player at #22, they probably wouldn't have gotten one if they used the pick.

I, for one, am really looking forward to adding a 30.6% 3FG shooting specialist. Just make it a priority to retain Troy Daniels if you're going for a rotation shooter. Hornets ideally will throw out Walker/Batum/Kidd-Gilchrist anyway.

I wish that all the people who said they gave up on the Hornets when they drafted Frank really did.

Ya let's ignore his 38% career average. I'm glad Nic Batum's 32% from three the year they traded for him didn't stop the Hornets because that deal is looking like a steal.

Also, we really upset about not paying Big Al at 31 3 years/$30mm? I love the dude but he's played fewer and fewer games every season since 2013 and it's getting harder for him to keep off the weight. More of a luxury than a necessity.

No

The Hornets are not the Spurs.

Batum does more than shoot. You know that, though.

And the Hornets aren't last year's dysfunctional Kings. You know that too.

Meh, I'm out.

Good for Cho for locking up Batum, but I don't really have high hopes for the rest of the summer. You clearly do, which is great. Let's just leave it there.

I don't have "high hopes", no big names or anything. Maybe 50/50 chance of bringing back Marvin, they'll sign a backup or two, and big IF MKG can stay healthy I think the Hornets will be a similar level of quality team as last year... which no one was expecting last year btw and is fine by me.

I'm not (but apparently it has ruined Strickland's day). He can't stay healthy, and he's got a ton of miles on his no longer fresh legs (one of the last guys to make the jump straight from high school). I'll always look back fondly on the 2013-14 All-NBA season for Big Al, but he's never going to come close to that kind of production again for an extended stretch of games.

My day is fine, thank you.

I know that this may be lost on Wake fans, but improvement isn't an unrealistic expectation. Hornets have some intriguing pieces, but I really hate some of Cho's recent moves and I can't see this team getting all that better this offseason.

It was going to be tough to improve with 5 of your own key players are FAs and every team in the NBA having cap space. The way they prioritized the FAs was correct IMO. CLee, Lin, and Al are backups when the team is healthy.

Marvin would be a backup on most teams. That's the only thing that disturbs me is the possibility of shelling out big bucks for MWs

I like Marv and Batum, my only concern with them is they're both known for playing much much better in contract years

True, since both had the best years of their career last year. For a 3rd/4th option on a team, you can't do much better than Marvin did last year. He had a bad playoff series, but during the year he went 12 and 6 playing in 81/82 games shooting 40% from 3 and playing really good defense with the ability to switch posts and wings.

If the Hornets could somehow do 2 years with a 3rd year team option, I swear I almost wouldn't care what the money per year was. The cap is going up another $16mm next year so it would be hard for a 2 year contract to really hurt the Hornets. Batum is a risk but it had to be done, there's just no way around it. The fact that they got him for ~33mm less that the total max he could have gotten is a bonus.

Portland fans talked about it a lot with Batum. Marv sucked his first year in Utah, did much better his second year when he was about to be a free agent, sucked ass his first year in Charlotte, then muuuuch better this past season. Again like both guys just hope they don't half ass it after their contracts. Def want both of them just my concern for next season

I like Big Al as much as strick, sad to see him go but also understand FYC's about his body breaking down

Their big addition is MKG. He is arguably the best all-around player on the team and didn't play anything meaningful last year. I think the goal is to try to keep everything else relatively constant and count on him to bring the big improvement. Still gotta replace Lin though.

I hear you re: MKG. I'm cheering for the kid and I hope that next year is the year.

Still, the rest of your post is why getting rid of #22 pissed me off so much. This was going to be an awful year for free agent point guards, even before taking cap realities into consideration. Hornets need a capable backup and I doubt they're going to find one this off-season when the likes of Ish Smith are signing for $6 mil/year.
