Pharoh Cooper has two high school state championships, the Most Valuable Player Award in this year’s state title game and an Offensive MVP honor in the 2011 finals.
*
Havelock’s star senior capped off his prep football career by being selected as North Carolina’s Offensive MVP in the 76th edition Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.
*
Cooper, a University of South Carolina commit, accounted for more than 300 all-purpose yards and a touchdown run.
*
Cooper’s North Carolina squad fell to South Carolina, 23-19, at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday.
*
“In middle school, I never thought I’d have all these opportunities,” Cooper said. “It’s a great feeling and a great honor. I have to give all of the glory to God. He put me in this situation.
*
“It was a great feeling, in my final high school game, to be named Offensive MVP.”
*
The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is a prestigious all-star high school football game that pits the elite players from North Carolina against the best from South Carolina.
*
Cooper’s 45-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave North Carolina a 13-9 lead.
*
Rams’ senior A.J. Coplon made his presence felt as a defensive back. He played lockdown pass coverage and recovered two fumbles.
*
“Coach (Jim Bob) Bryant and the Havelock staff prepared us well from our freshman year until now,” Cooper said. “They really developed us into better players.
*
“There were a lot of Division I players out here, and we had to make plays.”
*
New Bern senior Jachin Watkins played several snaps in the backfield. He carried the ball five times.
*
“Even though we lost, I still feel good about it,” Watkins said. “This has given me more confidence, playing against better talent.
“The level of competition was high. We had 22 Division I commits, and South Carolina had like 12 or 14.”
*
The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas was not solely about the game. The players practiced every day last week, attended mixers, were honored at a parade and visited the Shriner’s Hospital.
*
Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney was the guest speaker at Friday’s banquet.
*
“It was a great experience,” Cooper said. “It was an honor to come out here and do it for the kids in the Shriner’s Hospital. We visited with them and I hung out with all of these players. It is an experience I will never forget.”
*
Cooper passed for 2,895 yards and 25 touchdowns for Havelock this season. He ran for 1,267 yards and 15 scores, and returned four punts for a touchdown.
*
He was the MVP of Havelock’s 55-21 win over Concord in the 3A state championship game in Winston-Salem on Dec. 1.
*
Coplon had two interceptions, both returned for a touchdown, and three fumble recoveries on the year. The East Carolina commit returned four punts for a touchdown, and caught 11 passes for 291 yards with two scores.
*
Watkins was named the Offensive MVP following New Bern’s dramatic 39-38 win over Porter Ridge in the 4A state championship game on Nov. 30.
*
He scored four touchdowns, including the game-winner with 26 seconds remaining.
*
On the season, Watkins, a UNC-Charlotte commit, ran for 1,336 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also caught 15 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns.
*
“It was a great senior year for me,” Watkins said. “We went undefeated, won a state championship and was invited to play in the Shrine Bowl. They were all high on my high list to do.”

Dunn is as gifted/impressive as any of the other LB's committed. Big kid. Kind of like Tim Jackson we missed on.

Former WR commit Alex Montgomery was just on SC Top 10 plays for two one-handed catches in the championship game. Had 199 yards and 3 TDs in the loss.

Is there a bio available on him? I haven't seen one - where is he from?

Lot of recruiting talk about Greer, people are pretty on the fence about his college ability due to playing in a weak conference and his dad coaching him to give him all world numbers. Although, he is going to FL so I'm sure there's just a bit of talent there....

Talked to the kid a few times always liked Wake he took his sweet time.

New commit. 3 star DB out of Florida. Michael Stevenson:

I still have my doubts about Tim Duffie's ability to coach the secondary, but he, Derrick Jackson, and Jonathan Himebauch seem to responsible for all our best recruits.

Welcome Michael!

We needed a good safety commit and I think we got one. 6', 180 lbs, 4.5 40 and room to grow. Rated a 3* and has been high on Wake for a while.
This month is really turning out to be a good one for FB commits. This is our 4th commit in Dec and they've all come from TX (1) and FL (3).
If we can finish with the RB, DT, DE and CB I have on my Christmas wish list, I'll be a happy camper

Will Likely making a decision friday. I wonder if we still have a chance?
