It's gonna be hung! CP3's jersey finally getting retired March 2

All this talk about retiring his number because of his post-Wake stuff....

To be honest he hasn't really "accomplished" anything in the NBA (if we're using the same definition that has been used to say he didn't "accomplish" anything at Wake)

He hasn't won a championship or an MVP...so I don't really understand that argument.

He's been named to All-NBA teams, which is pretty much no different than All-American...and the argument could be made that it's tougher to be named an All-American since there are so many more players in the NCAA.

So if stats and AA at Wake aren't reason enough to retire his jersey, then why would essentially the same qualifiers be used for his pro success?

lol at all of this.

yesterday i gave townie a rep saying his post was my favorite in the history of the OGB. this is the exact opposite of townie's post.

And Slim wonders why people shit all over him on here.

You do it to yourself, brah.

Did you guys know it is much harder to finish in the top 5% at Arizona State than Harvard? Just so many more students at Arizona State.

I am not related to this man.

Longer, yes. More impressive, no.

This is not a fair comparison because muggsy hardly played his freshman year - playing behind future pro danny young.

Extreme example, but, if kyrie goes on to become the best player in the history of the nba, and thus the 'best player' ever to play at duke, should they retire his jersey?

Uhh, yes.

This thread will be a great artifact in 50 years. From this, we'll be able to project who the old cranky posters are then - I'm betting a lot of them make that jump. Young cranky men = old cranky men. So congrats CP3 haters, you're going to be BKF when you get old!

Also, LOWF is being butthurt about a top 5 draft pick leaving early 8 years later.

Winner.

Also, Rodney, God love him, won the same number of ACCT games, went just as deep in the NCAAT, and earned one fewer 1st team AA as CP3 while also leaving school early. He's in the rafters and I don't hear anyone arguing he shouldn't be, myself included.

I'm becoming uncomfortable with the number of posters who don't understand what Muggsy and Rodney meant to Wake Forest athletics.

Without reading all the bullshit I'll just say Muggsy was the best defensive point guard I've ever seen and Rodney was a force of nature. I pity basketball fans that didn't see these two play at Wake. I will never forget watching them play their hearts out for Wake.

I think that's the issue. Sometimes "intangibles" need to be factored into the discussion. And those are things (other than pure basketball talent and numbers) that both Muggsy and Rodney brought to Wake. There was just something that Muggsy brought to the teams he played on that can't really be defined or quantified. With Rodney, he showed that Wake Forest basketball was back on the national scene.
I often wonder how many assists Muggsy would have had if he had been on good teams with players who could actually catch his passes and score.

Wow! What a terrible comparison. You may want to brush up on the history of the program before comparing Rodney and CP3.

Do you support hanging Justin Gray and Robert O'Kelley's jerseys in the rafters?

They're #8 and #9 on the all-time scoring list. (After all, we put up Josh Howard's jersey - #11) . What about Darius Songalia and Eric Williams? We hung Rodney's jersey...

Great logic, my man.

CJ and Travis will both be top 15 and Mckie especially top 10 in Wake's history. Partially because they've been playing well and partially because there are so many more games now than there used to be.

It would also be ludicrous to suggest that they should have their jerseys retired because they weren't good enough to go pro early and thus were able to stay 4 years to rack up huge numbers, but the logic used by some of the detractors is implicitly suggesting that this would be the case.

10-15 PGs???? He'll be top 5 when it's all said and done!

i was being conservative, using my CYA style, i honestly believe top 5 as well, just am not old enough or wise enough on b-ball to state top 5 with confidence. but i agree

When he finishes his degree, yes, not before

dude jerseys are not retired based on academics. they are retired based on skill and/or achievement. and even if there isn't many tangible achievements to point to, he dominated every other PG he faced when he was here. the dude was best pg in the nation at college level. therefore, the lack of accomplishment is more than compensated for by his inhuman, sacrilegious level of skill. He spent two years at wake just cause he likes the school, he didn't have to go to college at all.

this isn't even a discussion.
