Shaka turns down UCLA

Mack Brown is probably the highest paid coach in college football after taxes.

Pretty much no probably about it. He's the second highest paid coach in college football pre-tax and lives in a state with no state income tax. Saban is the highest, but only by about a hundred grand and Alabama has a 5% state income tax.

If you had a choice, where would you be the head coach?

The Duke brand is the Coach K brand. Belongs right next to IU.

I don't buy that the UCLA brand is any weaker than Carolina or Kansas. East coast bias imo.

Also UCLA is in the middle of one of the most fertile recruit regions in the nation.

This is why I'm so glad Wellman conducts his coaching searches in private. Would much rather land a [Redacted] with a secret search than risk the embarrassment of a Shaka turning us down. I couldn't live with myself if that happened.

While Gainesville is FAR from my ideal place to live, I think I would say UF. A lot of recent success, a $ athletic department, and the ability to win, but at the end of the day, all of the pressure is on the head football coach, not me. This is why I don't think Billy Donovan will leave.

Better to land a [Redacted] in a secret search than have a [Redacted] turn you down in a public search. And you know Wellman would find a way to make that happen.

UT has that without being in Gainesville.

Actually it hasn't been nearly as fertile as you'd think over the past four recruiting year. Since 2010, there has only be one Top 10 scout player form SoCal. Only five others in the 30-50 range and eight from 51-100.

They've hit a dry spell.

Of course UCLA can pick people from anywher.

If that were to happen.....oh Lord.

i hate to say it, but state would move from just a notch above unc and duke to my clear cut second favorite acc school. i'm all fucking in on mr. and mrs. enfield. big illini fan now because of groce.

I don't know shit about UCLA's finances, but it would be an expensive proposition to (1) buy out Howland; (2) buy out Gottfried; and (3) pay Gottfried's salary. I also find it hard to believe after the disappointing season NCSU just had that they'd want to hire Gottfried. And, as I posted on another thread, Gottfried's son is entering his senior year of high school next year and is a key player on that school's basketball team, which just lost in the state title game. For all those reasons, I suspect Gottfried to UCLA is unlikely.

That said, if he does leave and NCSU hires Mr and Mrs Enfield, they'll probably move into my neighborhood and all my wildest dreams will come true.

RJ, still think he'd come to Wake?

Not trying to pick on RJ here, but expectations are out of control. There is no South Beach or Rodeo Drive near Winston-Salem. Can't even get good pizza or Chinese for that matter. Richmond isn't all that, but location is part of any coach's decision (or more aptly, such coach's wife's decision). Reality check?

I was at a dinner a few years ago with Mack Brown and Rick Barnes. Rick told a story about Mack getting a raise one year just so he was paid more than the OU coach. Barnes said that Texas AD Deloss Dodds was asked if he was trying to keep up with the Jones'. Dodds informed the reporter that UT is the Jones'.

UCLA is a better job than Duke and probably a better job than Carolina (pretty much have the west coast to yourself). He's going to be a VCU lifer.

Not a chance on UCLA being a better job than Duke or UNC.

UCLA actually offered? Or he preemptively turned down a possible offer? I find it hard to believe UCLA low balled him to the point that 1.5 mil a year at VCU seemed like the better option....I was also under the impression that UCLA was waiting until the tourney finished in order to gauge interest on a number of the coaches still in it.....article seems like a stretch, citing "someone close to the situation."

Gott just tweeted that he wasn't leaving

Just never saw it happening. Too much money for UCLA to but out all of those contracts and to also pony up for a new contract. Glad Gott is staying even if he isn't the best coach in the world. He has us back on the right track and is a hell of a lot better than KoolAid Sid.

A note on Shaka, I saw posted somewhere that some middle eastern prince is obsessed or has some connection to the VCU basketball program and that Shaka really doesn't have to ever worry about the $ part of coaching. Basically this guy is allowing VCU to match any offer if they want to out of his pocket. ANy chane that has a shred of truth in it? Sounds completely far out but Shaka is still at VCU....
